D&D 5E Races that make a better class than yours.

In my game I want players to pick a race they want to play instead of picking the race that is best for the class they want to play. My first house rule is that a player can move 2 of their racial bonus ability points to any other ability that does not already have a bonus. It would make sense...

D&D 5E Races that make a better class than yours.

It does look like the Tabaxi was custom made for monk. The only wasted trait is the +1 charisma. The unarmed strike does the same damage as the level 1 monk martial arts, but it can be slashing damage when needed. That being said, the wood elf is still a good choice for shadow monk. You get a...

    D&D 5E A Wizard without a spell book...........

This is why I like reading the boards. I was under the impression that a wizard needed their spellbook to recover spell slots on a long rest. Thanks for giving me one more thing that I won't do wrong at my table. So it looks like a captured wizard that has his spellbook and arcane...

D&D 5E How do you handle sleeping guards/monsters/victims?

The Sleep spell makes you unconscious, but it also only can be broken with a slap, shake, damage or spell duration expiring. I'm not sure if non-magical sleep has the same rules. The group made a good choice of using the pass without trace to get into position for the surpise attack, but I...

D&D 5E [5e] looking for Reavers of Harkenwold conversion

It definitely has a different feel. 4E was big on the fighting where every fight seems like an event. In 5E I'm spending less time getting out my minis and not every fight is long enough to warrant setting up the map. I do plan on going back to my 4E conversion, but when CoS came out I really...

D&D 5E [5e] looking for Reavers of Harkenwold conversion

I started to run it in 5th, but I did not get very far. I ended up with just converting the first book (The Iron Circle). I did not find any other conversion that I could use. I was not sure what level would be appropriate for each part. My original plan was to run Reavers of Harkenwold...

D&D 5E Are You Planning on Subscribing to D&D Beyond

If WotC wanted to release their books on PDF, then they could be sold seperately or as a bundle directly from WotC. WotC has given their reasons why they won't release their books on PDF. It seems that you are still not understanding that seperate companies are providing products for 5E and...

D&D 5E Why does WotC put obviously bad or illogical elements in their adventures?

When I find something in a published adventure that I think is cheezy or does not work with my DM style/campaign world, then I change it. What does not work for one DM may seem fine for another one. None of the things you mentioned bothered me, but I'm sure if I get SKT I'd have things that I...

D&D 5E Are You Planning on Subscribing to D&D Beyond

Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Twitch, and WotC are all seperate companies. If we go to the theatre to see a movie we don't expect to also get it free on iTunes and also be able to watch it on HBO without a subscription. The Compendium and the virtual table top versions are not just PDFs of the...

D&D 5E Do the official WotC adventures cheat with xp?

Ahh...thanks for the info. I was doing it wrong then. Now my maths are wrong. =)

D&D 5E Do the official WotC adventures cheat with xp?

EDITED: My math was off I just took a look at Feathergale Spire and if you calculate based on 4 characters (standard for their calculations) in a level 3 party then you get 1,231 xps (per character) in the tower if you hunt the manticore with them and then end up fighting everything in the...

    D&D 5E Thoughts on 5e skills.

That sounds good. Of course the tools proficiencies also see a huge discrepancy in usefulness in a campaign. If someone is looking for a background they may want to get one with theives tools over one with playing cards.

D&D 5E Moving through occupied square....

As far as I can tell, by RAW it's not allowed unless specified (like what you mentioned). From D&D Beyond: The DMG p.272 has an optional rules for 'Overrun', 'Shove Asside', and 'Tumble'. These all let you move past (or through) a creature that is blocking your path. I don't think it is...

D&D 5E the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

I like that rule. When fighting someone with a polearm you want to be in close so you are not so close to the pointy end. I'm pretty sure that 'setting the spear' used to be a standard ability with pole weapons in D&D (my memory may be off on that).

D&D 5E the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

By the rules, you can make an opportunity attack when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach. That should mean that if the hostile creature moves from 5 foot to 10 foot away from you then you would not get an attack of opportunity.

D&D 5E All Long Rests of All Short Rests?

The DMG (p267) has an 'Epic Heroism' variant for resting that is a 5 min short rest and a one hour long rest. It recommends letting the casters gain half their total spell slots during a long rest and having level 6+ spell slots still take an 8 hour rest.

    D&D 5E Thoughts on 5e skills.

I'm surprised that Athletics is not on there for grappling and climbing/jumping. I know a dex based character will try to talk you into letting them acrobat their way up a wall or rope, but I try to disuade the players from shenanigans like that.

    D&D 5E Thoughts on 5e skills.

I use the variant rule for skills on page 175 of the players handbook. It's basically saying to use whatever ability/skill combo that would apply to the situation. That let me remove skills that made less sense. Here is what I ended up with in my house rule document: Another thing to think...

D&D 5E the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

What ranged restrictions would you like to see added as standard or optional rules? Maybe others can be inspired to house rule something in. Right now having disadvantage if a monster in in melee range of you, the half cover for targets that are in a melee, and losing the ability to perform...

D&D 5E the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

The advantages/disadvantages of strength and dex fighters is meant to be built into the system and each gets their own flavor of useful weapons, armor, and feats. A DM who does not agree with the built-in rules can make some changes to help the balance at their table. The ranged/melee weapon...
