D&D 5E Is the Wild magic Sorcerer as terrible as it seems?

I would like to see a UA article with an alternate version of the Wild Magic Sorc that makes it easier to figure out when a surge happens. I'm not sure of the best way to do it, but my idea was to have a surge happen when the sorc casts a level 1 or higher spell with an attack roll and gets a...

Possible Solution to the Dexterity vs Strength debate?

For what you are trying to do, I think it looks good. Normal guards (str 13) can't use a polearm, but maybe them having disadvantage for using a halberd instead of a spear would be a good thing. NPC Knights and veterans (str 16) can use two-handed weapons, so that fits with what kinds of NPCs...

Possible Solution to the Dexterity vs Strength debate?

I've been posting and I've forgotten to address the original post. The idea is nice, but I'm worried that you are overthinking/overcomplicating the game without actually addressing the issue you want to rectify (str vs. dex benefits). I made a similar change in my game to address the 'heavy'...

Possible Solution to the Dexterity vs Strength debate?

It seems a player could justify using any stat as their attack stat for a bow. My warlock designed his own bow that uses charisma as an attack stat (dryad wood). Monsters jump in front of my arrows because they want to please me.

D&D 5E CR and NPC HD in a low level world

It's mostly for the feel. I prefer having a world where the players can be chased out of a town by an angry mob, but also be able to challenge a renowned duelist and feel they have a chance to win. If my campaign goes past level 10 it involves traveling to the Feywild, Shadowfel, or the...

D&D 5E CR and NPC HD in a low level world

I was thinking about using HD. The thing is, the CR can vary widely depending on other factors besides HD. A CR 5 gladiator has 15 HD, and a CR 6 mage has 9 HD. It does seem like it would work somewhat for my campaign. A level 9 spellcaster sounds like a more worthy adversary than a big bag of...

Possible Solution to the Dexterity vs Strength debate?

I had a couple cheap bows when I was little, so I definitely had strength issues while using them. It's just that not everything has to make real world sense in D&D. I'm not sure why a rogue can do more damage with a dagger than he can with a balista. I also don't know why a halfling with 20...

D&D 5E CR and NPC HD in a low level world

My campaign world has a level 10 player cap. It's similar to the Dragonlance world level cap. The players are forced to explore different planes or find small pockets of high magic in the world to advance past level 10. I want a player fighter that is level 10 to be seen like a Lancealot...

    D&D 5E Retireing characters

A lot of this depends on how the game is run. If it's more of a 'dungeon of the week' kind of campaign the players could swap characters at will and it will not change the story. If the campaign is story heavy, then replacing characters needs more thought to make sure alliances and story...

Possible Solution to the Dexterity vs Strength debate?

Dexterity based weapons are based on accuracy. That's why they use dex instead of STR. I'm sure that DEX based characters would also like to come up with a justification to user their DEX for their polearm or greataxe as well.

    D&D 5E Retireing characters

I would put a penalty for changing characters so it does not happen too often, but I would also want to make it easier for a character to swap out if they wanted to. Starting at level 1 may be too harsh, but I would not want the new character to have the same level as the other characters...

D&D 5E How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?

That's why I read the boards too. I want to see what issues other DMs have.

D&D 5E Another Phandelver question re: Redbrand Hideout

Now that Glasstaff knows he has enemies in town willing to fight him, he gets to make the next move. He has more Redbrands than those who were in the manor when the party tried to sneak in. If the party had decimated his Redbrands, then he may have fled, but with all his minions intact, the...

D&D 5E Curse of Strahd (spoilers): PC wants to be a werewolf

Even if you don't want to turn the character into an NPC, I would think it would still need to be a 'curse' instead of just a power boost. If the player is aware that he may lose control of his character in times of stress or hunger, then he may want to think about curing his lycanthropy. You...

    D&D 5E Tankiest 5th-level PC

Have you decided on your uncommon magic item yet? I was thinking gauntlets of ogre strength so you can pump up your dex and con instead of str. That would work well with a barbarian for AC and HPs. Other options could be +1 shield, Adamantine Armor, Periapt of Wound Closure, or a Cloak of...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Sorcerers: Favored Souls, Phoenix Sorcery, Sea Sorcery, & Stone Sorcery

I like the idea of a Favored Soul, but it seems to be lacking in the 'why to pick this class' department. I been trying to determine the best way to make a non-armored healer besides just having a cleric who does not wear armor. I just don't think the Favored Sould has anything that a regular...

D&D 5E Concentration while Short Resting

I had not noticed the 'refresh their minds and spirits for spellcasting' part before. I think it would be reasonable for a DM to rule that concentrating on a spell would keep a player from getting the benefits of a short rest. It could at least be reasonable to not give back the spell slot...

D&D 5E Listened to latest "Lore you should know" and......

I felt the same way after reading a few Forgotten Realms books. They were filled with people much more powerful and interesting than the players' characters. In my world, a level 10 person would have stories sung about them because they are so rare. To get challenged past level 10 it's time...
