The Nature of Change (or, Understanding Edition Wars)

Says who? I'll add a few more questions to my "edition-wars debate" list: What do people hope to accomplish, when using (often derogatory) metaphors in discussions about the different editions? Could the point be made without risking antagonizing people needlessly with thinly veiled insults...

The Nature of Change (or, Understanding Edition Wars)

I was thinking about a clever and witty response, but couldn't really come up with any. I'll go with qft and add that i am amazed that you insist on being reasonable and friendly despite all. cudos.

The Nature of Change (or, Understanding Edition Wars)

To be fair, these kind of attacks come from both sides of the fence (or train). Some followup questions (preferably from the people who've made attacks) i'd like answered as well: What is in it for the people making these kinds of attacks? What outcome do they hope for? What justifies the...

The Nature of Change (or, Understanding Edition Wars)

And it still is... IMO and all that. A lot of people seem to argue that 4e is not a level based, high fantasy, kill-stuff/grab-the-loot, type of game anymore. I'd argue that it is. And I've heard that the global financial crisis is actually all part of WoTC's master plan to rule the world...

    Playtest: The Druid (merged)

It looks very cool. It doesn't seem to have any summon spells at these levels, but a lot of wildshape goodies. Also, it seems to be a primary controller but with secondary class roles. Strange, but fair enough i guess. Can someone compare it to the druid-clone in the advanced players guide?

    Which is D&D? 4e or 2e?

I've seen a number of threads similar to this, or seen this type of question pop up in other threads. But why is it even relevant to ask it? If it is a fun game, what does it matter what label you give it? I accept that the label DnD could once be used to identify what game people were...

    Restart From Last Save?

I played a short scenario (not dnd) at a con once where the gimick was stolen from groundhog day, so we restarted the day whenever we were killed (by aliens, werewolfs, cops etc.) or after 24 hours. It was actually a traveller scenario (which we didn't know until afterwards), where we were...

Was Santa Claus the reason you started playing D&D?

I started playing with a friend who had gotten the blue set (expert ?), as a birthdaygift when they were 10 or 11 years old. Ofcourse we didn't use any of the official rules in the beginning, just the d10 Rules were instead: high is good/succesful. Low is a miss. Lots of stolen policecars...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

This is the kind of conversation which happens only when i'm not drunk, but it seems i should be:)

    4e: The final word

Holy double standards, batman. And for what its worth, i don't believe in the mythological ideal of a "True DnD". It seems that every group has its own idea of how to play, what world to play in (homebrew or otherwise), and what houserules or even ruleset to use, that its wrong to label any...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

Take a bow mr.midget, cause you've just won the thread:) IMO there is no other reason to have these kinds of discussion threads than to learn of potential problems of the rulesets, of mechanics or fluff, and search for solutions. If wotc listens in to what we come up with, thats just a bonus...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

okay. Thats what i was looking for, an answer. I might not agree with you, but through dialogue, a solution could be found to make the 4e acceptable for your homegame. My suggestion is to change the name of the eladrin race to high-elf or sidhe, when playing your own games. Your input is online...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

dangit, i have no idea how to multiquote:( but anyway.. This is an example of why these discussions go so badly. You are answering another question than was asked:) And also, i'd still like an answer from you as to why it matters that the people on the street know what kind of race your dnd...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

Odds are that you aren't likely to play dnd with any of these total strangers, and they likely won't care what your dnd characters race is called. Why is this a problem? So if they'd named the race Sidhe or high-elf, it would have been okay? The name is your major concern? well, then i could...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

A lot of people, even you in your earlier post, complain that 4e departed from what was the core implied dnd setting. And now you want to remove the original parts? Wouldn't that make it even less dnd? But i agree with you. I'd also like to see a generic version of dnd 4e, with pointbuy race...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

I still don't believe it to be true, that the core setting hasn't changed in 30 years. But even so, it begs the question, why shouldn't it? People who like the implied setting of a specific previous edition will disallow eladrin, warlords and dragonborn. And still have a good game. Others will...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

Your argument is that the core implied setting hasn't changed in 30 years until 4e. IMO this is not remotely close to true. But even so, 4e has all of what you'd expect from a dnd game including classes, races, monsters and magic. It has fighters, clerics, thiefs and magic-users (maybe named...

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

This is an "only one true game" type of argument. Slightly more useful, but not much.

4E being immune to criticism (forked from Sentimentality And D&D...)

This is an "i hate apples because they aren't oranges" type of argument. And highly irrelevant and very counterproductive. These specifics are perfectly acceptable points of contention. Discussion of these points (and HP, milestones, multiclass rules etc.) are reasonable. Some proponents of...
