does CN get a bad rap?

I became irritated by that definition and played an insane character in an attempt to show its absurdity. Unfortunately the DM thought it was the perfect CN depiction. The character attempted to barbeque a dracolich at one point, and I'm not talking about fireballs. -Mara

Why do all paladins, monks, and druids seem exactly the same?

It's all about the stick. Druid: Worship the stick. Monk: Break the stick with fist or whack people with stick. Paladin: Stick up the -Mara

The Worst and/or Best Player You've Ever Known

Best: Eh, hard to tell. The good ones blend together more than the bad ones. Worst: Girl in my previous group who would play certain stereotypes repeatedly and couldn't separate in character romance with out of character romance, to the point where we could predict her eventual...

To everyone who works on the Ennies: thanks

I would also like to thank everyone who's spent their time on making the Ennies run smoothly and keeping them worthwhile.

    Midnight Essentials

Things to Consider: How do the characters know to deal with the dead? If you want the fell to be a surprise, I'd recommend some sort of local tradition, such as cremation, that would naturally handle the problem without calling out the reasons behind it. If you link it to an idea of honoring...

    Do you miss the piercer?

The Raise Dead line of spells can be found in the player's handbook. Raise Magic Item can not. Over the course of an entire campaign, resources can be found to fix pretty much anything that ails a character, including missing legs, but once the Sword of Ubercool is gone, it's gone.

Hey, people in prison need D&D too!

This issue led to the dissolution of a prior gaming group.

    Do you miss the piercer?

I don't particularly miss them. When I have used them, they generally elicited a "well, what's the point of that?" reaction when they missed.

    Help me save my game

Try physically rewriting a part of the published adventure. I've found that my Savage Tide sessions run much smoother when I've drawn copies of the maps on a pad of graph paper. It gives me a better sense of how all the parts fit together, rather than thinking of them on a room-by-room basis...

    Toys for use as minis

Along these lines, Cheez-its fit nicely on the battlemap and players fight ferociously to deal the last blow for the honor of eating their foe.

Did someone declare January "Edition Wars" month?

I bought some cheap 1e books to see what the fuss was all about. [Started playing with 2e, gleefully converted after a session with someone other than our previous 2e-uber-alles DM. Yes, they exist. Be afraid.] After reading them, laughing heartily, and thanking the gods of market research, I...

Ever just redo a players character sheet?

I've gone over a player's sheet for arithmetic errors on occasion during a period where they were leaving the sheets with me (the DM) for safe-keeping. The player in question didn't mind. Currently they're holding on to their own sheets, so I just remind everyone to check their figures when...

The 10-foot pole, antithesis of what adventuring should be?

If it took the characters *two hours* to notice that it was that cold, would they not already be wearing proper gear? Waiting that long to inform the players of something their characters would have felt long before that time isn't making a statement about their skill.

GenCon Indy 2007, let's shake the male/female ratios--or not, they seem fine here ;)

Now that's the way to do it! Kids gaming with other kids or under the supervision of a parent is good. Gets them into the hobby and keeps them busy. I would just recommend against taking them to GenCon/gaming conventions unless you set up such an activity with [the friends you have...

GenCon Indy 2007, let's shake the male/female ratios--or not, they seem fine here ;)

Oh, I have zero problem with age segregated spaces. If it's too young to game, it should have a baby sitter, the last thing I want near my table is a bored toddler or screaming baby. If a bunch of females wish to congregate, let them do so, but the first person to point me to the Women's Area...

GenCon Indy 2007, let's shake the male/female ratios--or not, they seem fine here ;)

Did you ask your groupmates for examples of female gamers? Why is that important? Why would a pitch like "Hey, my friends and I are getting together on Saturday to play D&D, it's a fantasy game that's really fun. You know Lord of the Rings? Yeah, it's kind of like that, only you get to decie...
