D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

Also, AoE attacks have good chances of catching down foes. Even tossing one dart from a MM. Though the better choice may be Chill Touch. But, if you include adversaries you may invlude friendlies which takes it out of odds and to choices.

    D&D 5E A more dynamic skill system?

Ok so while it still feels to me like a very amorphous search for an imprecise better, here are some things I do. First, at any tier, remember that a failure on an ability check is not pass/fail - its options are complete success "overcome the challenge", fail "no progress" and "some progress...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

From my limited expertise and experience the primary impact on accuracy is movement, especially erratic movement, of the shooter. It's the big 800 lb gorilla compared to other factors one will normally deal with for direct shots. If you wanted to model that tp"realism" you should start at...

D&D General How do you feel about Save or Die?

Different tastes. I was using a homebrew form of death saves back in 3e. To me the beauty is to have that "vulnerable" period spawn immediate need for response to avoid death, to get you back in play. The drama is the push on the other PCs to get your downed character back up before that...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

To be fair, the vibes I often get are not compared to board games but more mmo or crpg where " builds" can be more dps compared meaningfully due to the enemies being programmed and known - a far cry fifferent from a ttrpg actual play. Those games are much more driven by choice from list...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

Huh? If two 3rd level evocation spells on the same list do not have a balance in play without adding in the GM choices of adversaries, if they can in an actual game with zero rule change vary widely in their power - then what value for balance do you use for this "comparing to another" list of...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

I have no idea what you are talking about. You went on about all the types of lists, I pointed out you left out skills and that the lists did not help with balance in actual play. You commented on levrl gating balance ehstever. Whatever points you msy be trying to make in your argument with...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

It has lists of skills too. None of those do whit for balance in an actual game. Fireball and Lightning Bolt are both 3rd level and may "compare" as vastly different power in a game with different frequencies of different creatures. If you find a list necessary for balance, thats fantastic.

D&D 5E Horde of shifter barbarians, prepare for the deluge!

I do agree here. Had a halfling or goblin barbie who used shortsword 14 str, 16 dex, 16 con. When raging used strength with reckless. When normal, used finesse. Had bow for range (sharpshooter iirc.) Works fine and AC is bigger early.

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

Actually I think we have very different conclusions on the impact of detail and impact. I have played many games with far more details and lists than 5e and sorry but my experience is that does not promote more balance, more scaling or whatever your experiences have shown you. Quite the...

D&D General How do you feel about Save or Die?

Not a fan of single roll KO or kill - esp outright kill with no lead in. It's not drama just chance. I would much prefer a three saves race or a three fails vs countermeasures race. Something that forces immediate response, even costly ones, from the victims. Bang, dead, next - just so dull.

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

Of course, that is one way, sort of extreme, but it does fit with my experience that the value and balance in any game stems from the challenges presented and how they show the abilities of the characters playing out - regardless of what header those capabilities fall under and regardless of how...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

I cannot fathom how your response bears any relevance to either the excerpt you quoted out or the larger post it was from. I am usually able to fathom out different playstyle differences etc but this jump to all diplomacy game seems like it's from some other thread or something. Hoe do you jump...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

The rules do not tell me how much plot coupon the wizard has to get things done, no guessing at all. The rules outline a good deal of the options they csn choose from but it says nothing about how much those intersect with what "needs to get done" in any given campaign. . That wizard might...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

I am not saying "DM fix it" at all, I am saying "DM creates it" not the rules. No amount of rules for PCs will amount to a molehill in the mountain of campaign balance between characters. As long as the GM creates the setting of the campaign in terms of what scenes get scene time, what enemies...

D&D 5E Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

In my view and my experience, balance and imbalance between characters in an actusl campaign are determined by how meaningful the abilities of those characters are to the challenges presrnted/chosen by the GM. So, really, there is not that much more effort either wsy in practice.

D&D 5E Intelligence and Wisdom Checks (Skills) as GM Tool for Plot Rationing or Expository Dump

"But to get back to expertise - the most important thing it does is reduce your chance of failure. The penalty for failure on knowledge skills is...?" Remember, in 5e, a failure can be some progress with setback. So, it's possible for a failure to give you say three info nits, one good that...

D&D 5E Attacking with spells instead of saves

In my 5e games (and most other games for as long as i remember) i have used players always roll (PAR) So when a player casts charm, the player rolls d20 + the spells DC. I compare that to a Wis Difficulty (modified save) to see if it succeeds or the target resists. Just like when an orc...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

Yeah, that is what it looked like to me. Most of my combats "that matter" are not won or lost by simple hp attrition even tho hp loss is often one of the ending events. Effects that prevent enemy actions(fasr), that expose targets to more hits (advantage), more crits. ( paralysis) and many other...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

Is it your perception that a majority of combats in PF2 do not end when HP thresholds are achieved (zero or higher if those trigger surrender or retreat events) but they end by foes defeated while still possessing significant HP?
