    What makes a monster terrifying?

In my experience, what terrifies players is... loss of control. An umberhulk or creature with that kind of ability to disrupt pretty randomly who can act and what they do will drive PCs or players nuts but not in a long term debilitating way- just a moment by momdnt uncertainty.

D&D 5E Intelligence and Wisdom Checks (Skills) as GM Tool for Plot Rationing or Expository Dump

Ok so, yes these skills will be used as one of the vehicles for delivering plot info. But that is not. all. First, essential plot info that "the GM needs to give anyway" wont be locked behind these. I may give it freely thru these but there will be other ways. So in this way, they see utility...

D&D 5E Downtime XP farming with animate dead or conjuration spells

To me, this could be a great "off-screen training" narrative (aka danger room) to show the training side of advancing thru experience. This scene could be used in games where you use the optional training costs/downtime requirements. I could even see this as a downtime training time that does...

D&D 5E UA Spell Versatility: A deeper dive

A comment on Wizards I will be adding yo the survey will be the need to add to their savant ability. "Due to the reduced cost for their "school spells" ascribing, if you choose one of your two spells gained per level in your school, you can add another free of that same school. Example: when a...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

Tend to agree. Most of my travel encounters are spotted by scouts then either avoided or followed. Many are social and explore not combat. A small number are more direct engagements that are over quick but lead to something or provide opportunity for info. A few are combat and heavy. Often...

D&D 5E UA Spell Versatility: A deeper dive

yup taking 9th as a good waypoint Sorc class knows 10 rangers knows 6 + 5 from PA (one free use each) + hunters mare (free uses equals wismod so lets guess 3) thats 10 vs 12 thats 13 castings for sorc vs 14+ for ranger sure sorc has level 5 vs level 3 going for it but... obviously the ranger...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

"If the party is long resting after every encounter then yes, 5e is easy." Imx this would be true if the GM does not adjust the difficulties for it. The reason they gave the 6-8 encounters info in the CR section, whatnot gives the GM, is not a prescription but a baseline. A GM seeing his...

    D&D 5E Monstrous Disappointments.

Yup. Wolves can track most things pretty easy. Magic specifically designed to prevent that like pwot - beats that. But while the specialized rogue might get stealth frequenyly above 18 without the magic, the fighter or cleric likely wont - esp in armor thst penalizes those checks. The wolf...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

Regardless of how one feels about the "adventuring day" presented in 5e, which is not a prescription just a competitive baseline, the fact that 1e did not have one and 5e does makes claiming anything about a comparison of lethality in "adventuring day" between those two sonething very much...

D&D 5E Absorb Elements, Shield Master, and Reactions for Saves

I think after many many posts back and forth, all I will say is you seem to have and be very very attached to dome fifferdnt PHB thsn I use and others here may use. If that PHB and whatever its rules are working for you, that's great. But it's not the one commonly in play.

D&D 5E Wounds - when would you give them?

To me the issue with the DMG and many other options is the focus on random applications. Did you roll a natural result? Did your die roll fail by 5? Did you drop to zero? I would want in a game lingering effects to have dome element of "causality" that established the risk as more than just...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

I agree.. when I saw "All of the evidence points otherwise." I think it only showed that the difference between data and evidence was being lost. The data provided did not seem to support any conclusion about 1e vs 5e actual gameplay other than different. Lists of monsters keyed by one stat vs...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

Absolutely it did in my games. Honestly, a thing my players have realized is the threat a low level apprentice adds to an encounter with a high level caster. Not just casual things like chill touch but quick obscuration effects that for instance, prevent counter-spell when the "master" gets...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

Ok, first point... "you can't really compare monster vs same monster name, because some monsters like orcs were bumped up. I.e., in 1e, an orc was a pretty close to a 1st level character, while in 5e, it's equivalent to a 2nd level character)" Why doesnt this apply to all aspects of the...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

The two things that I see as thexequivaldnt is reducing max hp and blocking any Hesling for a time, even just around. The latter can come in 5e from something as lovely as a cantrip but also a variety of effects such as diseases, curses and mecrmantic effdftsblike you see at a variety of levels...

D&D 5E UA Spell Versatility: A deeper dive

Uhhh.., ok, so, superheroes draggin out some new twist for a one-off puzzle solution is as super-trope as you can get, especially if it follows an initial try and fail. All that's missing is then forgetting about it in future issues like shuttle craft in a transporter botch trek episode...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

If I read some of these posts right, heroism is shopping. If you go buy the right stuff, right gear, right inventory so you have items to reduce the threats from cockatrices, medusa's, specters or whatever you were getting that 1e feel and surviving the "threats" (even tho that risk has been...

D&D 5E My biggest gripe with 5e design

"Again, if that’s your experience playing AD&D, then you were playing a vastly different game than everyone else. " My experience from 1e was everyone was playing "a vastly different game" than everybody else. From one table to another each AD&D game varied so much that things were often hard...
