D&D 5E Older editions weapon damage size modifiers--anyone remember why?

I think it was purely an attempt at making all weapons possibly useful in the right situation, which was kind of important for fighters. Being able to draw the right weapon for your target was the versatility they were strong in. It's been a while, but I also remember the weapon damages made a...

    D&D 5E Mounted Combat Questions

    1. Fighting on horseback seems like the very definition of "risky maneuvers that do not guarantee success." I try and keep it simple. If it's a normal horse, you have to make an Animal Handling check (DC kind of depends on the situation, but I'd start at 15) for every action you make. Failure...

D&D 5E I'm the DM and a player is trying to abuse the Immovable Rod. Advice?

The only way to prevent a player from abusing immovable rods is to give them a candle of invocation.

D&D 5E What is dead may... not be dead

Your comment just totally inspired me to create some kind of secret order that resurrects dead convicts for use in [insert nefarious purpose here]. They somehow blackmail them, or possibly disfigure the face beyond recognition, etc, and yeah... fun times. Thank you.,

D&D 5E Anyone else hoping that the next campaign book WotC releases is 15th to 20th levels?

No argument from me there. WotC obviously wanted to make 5e accessible for the whole 20 levels, based on dev comments about realizing how games tend to end after about level 10, and just looking at the XP advancement chart that shows the levels 11-20 speeding up after slowing down in the 4-10...

D&D 5E Anyone else hoping that the next campaign book WotC releases is 15th to 20th levels?

I imagine the lack of high level adventures has more to do with the difficulty in coming up with an interesting conflict that isn't trivialized by the player's access to high level abilities, magic, and contacts, AND is something that they can package neatly in as a sourcebook meant to fit into...

D&D 5E Urban Campaigns and Challenge Rating

Regardless of the setting, combat CR is only accurate if the group is having to fight "6 to 8 medium or hard encounters in a day." Mechanically, the term "day" should be considered the same as Long Rest. So if your group is doing 2 encounters, then heading home to sleep, you have a few...

D&D 5E How exactly does a Paladin break it's Oath?

Depends on the GM. My experience is that post-2e games pretty much treat the paladin's oaths and restrictions as optional fluff, but your GM should be able to tell you what he's expecting.

D&D 5E I need to increase my strength with a wish, what should i say?

If a GM fundamentally changes a character like that without the player's consent, he's just asking for drama. Yes, some groups/players can do that and have a blast. But not many.

D&D 5E I need to increase my strength with a wish, what should i say?

At which point the player starts rampaging/suiciding into the nearest named NPC and then walks out.

D&D 5E I need to increase my strength with a wish, what should i say?

Just ask your GM if he'll try and dick around with your wish spell or not. I know it was common, and actually expected, for wish spells to go awry, but they were also much more powerful and a campaign rarely saw more than one ever cast (and usually that was from a luck blade). I'd much rather...

    D&D 5E Mostly Useless Things in 5E?

I gave an off the cuff example, but you do highlight a potential problem. For another off the cuff response, I'd probably do something like give each background a few extra skills to cover it. So the barbarian would only lack proficiency in stuff like athletics if he chose a background that...

    D&D 5E Darkvision in a Gothic Setting

It's a magical place, so do something like have darkvision only work out to 10 feet. Make it clear to the characters that this isn't normal, and it will help put them in the same boat as everyone else, while still making the darkvision useful.

D&D 5E Elemental Evil DM Screen - Got one to sell?

That's an understatement. Not counting pretty pictures, half the screen is giving you "condition" information, complete with the pictures from that section in the PHB. The rest is a sum total of 3 charts for random encounters, and a map of the region. The map could be technically useful, but...

    D&D 5E Mostly Useless Things in 5E?

I used to do that here and there, but ran into the same trouble as with "spot" or "perception" type checks. Often adventures or GM's have plot clues and stuff that end up hinging on finding these clues. If someone makes the check, cool; they feel like their character contributed and was...

D&D 5E Looking for unique suggestions on making player resurrections punishing.

A few options. 1. Bring back the CON loss from older editions. Advantage to this option is it largely effects all classes (barbarians slightly more, however) equally. Disadvantage is that one or two CON drops in 5e isn't really that big of a deal in the long run, so unless you're killing...

    D&D 5E Mostly Useless Things in 5E?

INT is definitely a good dump stat, unfortunately. I wish it was somehow tied to, or influences, the number of skills you are proficient with. Maybe remove the skills assigned via class, and instead let your known skills be the result of your background + INT modifier.

West End Games Acquired By White Wolf's Stewart Wieck

I'm not losing sleep over it. The D6 system, as a general idea, is great. The WEG Star Wars system, however, hasn't aged well in the slightest. I still have nearly every book (other than the magazines) and actually started running a game every other week a few months ago for it, and boy has...

D&D 5E Tweak to TWF rules

D&D 5E Why is the pike 18 lbs?!?!?

That's why it's a deep rabbit hole. Weird item weights are nothing new with D&D, and I wouldn't lose sleep over it since the formula for determine carrying capacity is pretty useless as well (never takes into account weight distribution).
