    D&D 5E Adjudicating "bursting in"

Surprising something by bursting into a room basically requires two things. Sneaking up to the door without being heard or seen, and then bursting through the door in a way that allows everyone to act. As a GM, I usually rule this so that the person actually doing the bursting gets a surprise...

    D&D 5E Best one shot 5e adventures?

Adlib something, and use the optional Plot Points rule in the DMG (p 269). Since it's a one-shot adventure, I'd probably have everyone start with a few plot points, or maybe have plot points "recharge" after a short rest or something.

D&D 5E Rise of Tiamat Questions

Actually, I just found the part you're talking about. 100 mile radius "per dragon" is protected. When I think about that, it only supports my comment about the book not intending a set number of individual dragons, but instead "leaders". It's pretty well established that the chromatic dragons...

Because it helps give a sense of what kind of scale this conflict is at.

D&D 5E Absence of Low Level Summoning Spells

It's been a while since we played with it, but I recall Tiamat having 3 divine words. What we did was have the druid cast Conjure Animals (Elk x 8+more for higher spell levels) which sometimes went that same turn, and others had to wait for the next turn (depending on how their initiative was...

D&D 5E How do I create a fight with a Young Black Dragon...?

Fun fact: One character (just not a halfling or gnome) can reliably grapple a YBD, preventing flight. He can then "shove" the dragon prone, and it's basically a gangbeat after that. It makes no sense, but there you go. Also, a group of 7 characters is going to have no problem burning through...

D&D 5E Absence of Low Level Summoning Spells

Not sure why this is. Having said that, I'm glad they don't have more summon spells. As it stands, those are some of the most easily broken with the way 5e handles CR and character levels. Our group ran through a just-for-fun Tiamat fight once, and they were able to kill her in 3 rounds...

D&D 5E Using a Finesse Weapon with STR and DEX

You can use a finesse weapon with a dex bonus while not raging, and use strength as your bonus when you are raging. The finesse property doesn't require dex; it only allows it as an option. I did a similar build for a while, although it was more dual-wield focused. Not the most powerful way...

D&D 5E Somatic and Verbal - Value Added?

I that's intended, based on the arcane focus or component pouch items existing. I don't like it, because I think it just commoditizes the caster classes, but I guess that's why I've largely moved back to 2e again.

Rest and Injury at your table

We use the gritty realism rules. 1 week of rest is a long rest. 1 night of rest is a short rest.

D&D 5E Rise of Tiamat Questions

Oh I see. The way I read that is when you win the favor of a specific dragon, you gain access to other dragons he leads (those of his color). There's 5 metallic dragon leaders, so 5 potential "units" that you can assign to regions or factions leading up to the battle. If you have Nymmurh on...

    D&D 5E Using 3d6 for skill checks

Seems like too many dice for what D&D needs. Especially when we're talking about checks with advantage or disadvantage, which are fairly key aspects of 5e. Yeah, a single d20 can be a bit swingy, but I think that's where a lot of the fun can come from.

D&D 5E Rise of Tiamat Questions

Play it up however you want, but considering the horn actually causes deafness when you're close enough (and the thing is basically being blown on by an air elemental), it's most definitely producing sound.

D&D 5E Rise of Tiamat Questions

I think it's designed for the presence of the metallic dragons to simply counter the chromatic dragons. That way, when the players are pushing into the temple during the last battle, they aren't worrying about dozens of dragons attacking them on their way. I actually just skipped over the...

D&D 5E what to do with a camptured spellbook when you have no wizard?

Just rip pages out and sell them as "scrolls" of magic.

    The surprise round and you

As I stated, initiative would actually get rolled until stuff happens. That stuff could include the assassin taking an action, or the guard suddenly noticing the creepy guy hiding in the bushes right behind him, or another guard walking out of an outhouse just in time to notice the creepy dude...

    The surprise round and you

I don't like the way surprise works in 5e, so I basically ignore it. If someone sneaks up on another person (or groups), everyone who successfully did so gets to take an action. Once that's done, we roll initiative.

D&D 5E Why is level 5-10 the "sweet spot" in D&D

First, Wheel of Time is a very low-magic setting, when you think about it. Magic exists, but it's severely limited with a highly centralized power that's also sort of tied up with religion. Second, the crazy magic like teleportation is basically unique to a very few people in the world...

D&D 5E Why is level 5-10 the "sweet spot" in D&D

Agreed. I'm not advocating the game be released without a full 20 levels. Only that the expectation of players achieving all 20 of those levels for a "complete" journey needs to go away. I remember WotC talking about how they wanted to encourage groups to get past certain levels after...
