    D&D 5E 5E - Would you buy e-Books?

How is 50% off reasonable? The paper isn't the valuable part nor is the binding. If that were the case the owners of used bookstores would all be wealthy compared to, say, carpenters. And Office Max would be running Best Buy into the ground. The valuable part is the ideas and rules that have...

    D&D 5E 5E - Would you buy e-Books?

Allow me to rephrase for our colleague. Electronic form is massively important. Many of us don't want books any more. Many of us use digital devices, and for that group, the ability to look things up on using these devices is a far preferable over lugging books around. Last thing we need with...

    D&D 5E 5E - Would you buy e-Books?

I would like to add that I would be glad to pay for a Kindle edition of the books with the material formatted to fit nicely on that screen and proper indexing. The PDFs don't really work, as they don't word wrap and the tables don't seem to fit the screen well.

    My thoughts on 'niche protection'

To begin with, ranger didn't always mean "archer/dual-wielder in light armor", in fact it just meant archer. Many people cite Aragorn and Legolas as the models that made the ranger "archer/dual-wielder in light armor" and the archer=Legolas part I can see. But the Aragorn or...

    D&D 5E 5E - Would you buy e-Books?

I would most likely buy the e-books, with some of the books in hardcopy as well (for the players in my group who don't have the money to get the books themselves.) Ultimately, though, I would prefer to buy a licence, that would cover my access of the IP that came with any purchased books. Since...

Why do all classes have to be balanced?

Maybe they really liked the idea of the Operator or Ley Line Walker, but discovered that was a mistake when they encountered a dragon off in the wilderness and the Glitterboy was the only thing that could accomplish anything. Also, all the people I know who played Rifts eventually came to the...

    My thoughts on 'niche protection'

I should clarify then. I learned back in 3e that when I wanted a ranger, what I really wanted was a great archer with some nature skills. And if I wanted to make a great archer from the PHB and nothing else, I was better served by making a fighter with archer feats and abilities than by using...

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

To the first sentence, I would ask why? I don't understand how the monster manual will ruin the entire game if presented in a different fashion. To the third sentence, I answer "That could be an option too." It's kinda like some people buy each comic individually, while others wait until the...

Why do all classes have to be balanced?

But, as has been explained before, those games make no guff about letting the player know that the pleb is the weaker choice. That, if you are playing a pleb, your contribution will be in the freeforming and the such, kinda like . Also, the better books will state outright that thee type of...

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

Quite frankly, I would rather there were only two 'core' books, and then make additional material valuable enough to me that I am willing to purchase it. The PHB for players and DMG for DMs, the PHB should have everything needed to play a character from start to finish, the DMG should have...

Presentaion of Spells: To Prose or Not To Prose?

I was watching some show the other day with a wizard the shot fire out of his hands (The Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series, I think) and an amusing thought came to me. Wands and staffs are there so: the wizard doesn't damage his hand with the fire/lightning/cold/etc. the wizard has a finer...

    Bend, dont break.

From what it seems you are saying, this is very much like what was intended for "day" where the DM determines when you can sleep/replenish. So this would be a nomenclature change (replacing "day" with "adventure", and "Daily Power" with "Adventure Power") more than a mechanics change, but I...

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

I seem to remember, from my AD&D days, that it was in a binder format. You got a basic set of monsters, and then you would buy and add packs of monsters to it. You also had monster sheets "like character sheets" where you could build your own monsters and have them in your book. I would like...

Why do all classes have to be balanced?

That can be enough of an army. My 12th level sorcerer was able to get 48 followers to follow him. He used them to pull a Macross Missile Massacre with lvl 5 Wands of Magic Missile to do murder the BBEG as he stood before the city gates demanding our surrender. Did about 540 or so damage (144d4...

Magic is not the red-headed stepchild.

Actually, when you save vs. Phantasmal Killer, you are hoping that some part of your mind won't buy it. But it only needs to do that because the magic directly effecting your mind bypassing all filters that would indicate that it isn't real. Ask someone with phantom limb syndrome if they...

    My thoughts on 'niche protection'

Sorry about that, I used italics to emphisize the word "the", but when I go back and re-read it, it becomes appearant that it wasn't visually obvious enough. Also, it doesn't show up when someone quotes you because then everything is in italics. :) So please read it as something more along the...

    Bend, dont break.

I think a big part of 4th being the most controversial edition has more to do with everybody having a computer and internet access at the time of the switch than anything else. 5th will have a big hoopla too, and by 6th the novelty of being able to anonymously cry out grievances and belittle...

What do you want from the Monster Manual?

The recipe for monsters, in the current edition, is not in the MM but in the DMG in the section called "DM Toolbox" And I think that is how it should be. If I have the DMG and the PHB and some people to play with, that should be enough. But, I also want the option of making my life a little...

    "Aggro"

You actually touched on a number of things here that I have been pondering, but I'm going to stick to the thread topic. The thing you point out here that I find pertinent is that what you do is important. I would just like to add to that. How you do it may be what defines you in that role...

    Bend, dont break.

I guess the problem I can see in this is best described by narrative control and aggression. If you are not the aggressors, then you would need adequate control over the narrative to generate an opportunity to refresh. So, let us take the invasion example. You are defending a city that is...
