Dungeon Tiles - an appreciative note

I was volunteering at GenCon SoCal and one of my tasks was cleaning a bunch of battlemats. I can tell you from cleaning hundreds (OK, scores) that the red is the worst, then the blue, then the black. Green is the absolute best: green wet erase that had been sitting for days came off with no...

Is RAISE DEAD (etc.) too readily available in most D&D campaigns?

Amen brother! (Sister? Not readily apparent from username) I often allow PCs to come back from the dead, but it is never as easy as having a 7th level cleric cast some spell. Back from the dead at 7th level? 1/3 of the way through standard play? Come on, death should be a big deal, no a...

What book should I get? Suggestions, please.

Not to derail the thread, but Denizens of Avadnu is not available in pdf. I know, because I have been waiting for a downloadable version of it since I first heard about it (I have a rule against buying 3rd-party hardbacks).

What book should I get? Suggestions, please.

DMGI is a no-brainer. Without it you will be hard-pressed to run a game, period. MM is obviously a great choice, but most of it is available online as the Systems Reference Document, so you may not need it as much as some people think. Of the remaining MMs, MMIII is by far the best and most...

    Good rules for burning buildings?

Found it...thanks. For anyone who is checking out this post looking for the answer, it is on page 48 of the DMGII under 'archetypal locations.'

    Good rules for burning buildings?

You know, I thought it did but when I glanced through it this morning I couldn't find it. I will do a more thorough search when I am not late for work. Thanks.

    Good rules for burning buildings?

Does anyone know where I can find good rules for what happens when I send a party into a burning building? I know where to find heat dangers, catching on fire and smoke inhalation, but not things like roofs/floors collapsing, searching for survivors, rate of fire spreading, etc. Cityworks...

Can you "Take 20" to Hide?

By RAW it is 4 and 4 (will look for reference), which has always kind of annoyed me. In my experience someone always blows their Hide (or Move Silently) and someone else always gets lucky with their Spot (or Listen), meaning no one ever really sneaks up on/ambushes anyone. I have tried to...

Can you "Take 20" to Hide?

Easy enough: FAQ, 12/20/06, page 21 "Similarly, if a check’s success or failure depends on another character’s opposed roll, both sides have to roll when that opposition occurs—you can’t take 20 and “save up” the maximum result. If you hide in the bushes to attack a group of orcs that will...

Do you consider yourself a hardcore gamer or casual?

I am hardcore by the criteria set above. However, I do not consider myself to be 'hardcore' compared to the RPGA fanatics that I know. They fly around the world just to play in different LG metaregions, doing nearly monthly cons. THAT is hardcore!

    How do LG characters intimidate

Whenever I think of a good character intimidating someone, I think of Batman. I mean, the bad guys in Gotham have to know by now that 1) Batman has never killed anyone and 2) that Batman will risk his life to make sure a bad guy doesn't die. Yet when he drags them up to the top of the...

What Would Your Campaign/Setting's Inspirational Reading List Be?

Seconded. If you haven't read Erikson than you haven't read fantasy. Period.

Poll: What base classes would you prefer to see as prestige classes instead?

In general I am fine with the new base classes filling a niche previously handled by PrCs (duskblade, beguiler, etc). That being said, the first time I ever read the Spellthief I thought it was one of the coolest PrC ideas I had ever seen, but I just couldn't see it as a base class.

Could this be the future format of 4th Edition D&D?

This 'vision' of the future of D&D made me sick to my ass. This is not something I would ever play, nor would anyone I know. I am not saying that this isn't the direction WotC will go, because I am afraid it just might be. But I will not be along for the ride.

    OotS 406

This is like the 5th post suggesting Detect Evil is a foolproof divination spell, and I am only on page 2. Do I really need to list the ways that an ability based on a 1st level spell can be defeated? Do you really only allow Paladins in your game to attack stuff that detects as evil?

Poll: How much 3rd party do you use?

About 25%. I used to use a lot more, but I found that they didn't synergize well. I ran a campaign with Malhavoc's "Requiem for a God", the Books of Eldritch might and a lot of Scarred Lands stuff, but they were uneven and needed a lot of house-ruling, even more than D&D stuff. I may have...

    What would you Play?

What?? A 1/2 BAB class as a tank? Maybe I am unclear as to what 'tank' means...but I don't think so.

Which Is The Stronger Character Class - Sorcerer or Wizard?

Wizard, hands down. Sorcerers only even come close in combat, and at most levels other classes are better at killing things. Sorcerers are over-prepared for one or two situations and useless for dozens of others, whereas the wizard can be prepared for anything, albeit with foresight or...

    What ruins a campaign?

DM burnout. And since I am always the DM, when I burn out on a campaign then it is over. One I just ended it with an email (after obviously struggling with it for months), one I decided to 'take a break and come back to' (yeah, right). The last game I actually felt burnout coming on at level...
