In an Essentials build a straitjacket?

Really, honest question here. From the three builds we've seen, it seems like each build makes choices for the player. With a non-Essentials character, there is a build, but you can take a class feature for one build and then choose powers from another build, either to customize a character or...

D&D 4E No more reprints of the 4E core books?

I would pay cash money for a PHB1 that incorporated all the updates. I have a set of 30 hardcover books, and my own scheme for arranging it, and the one thing I hate most about Essentials is that it won't look nice on my bookshelf. I'll buy the Rules Compendium, but I'll stick it way down at the...

    Essentials Cleric

100 percent compatible My initial thought on reading the article was that this 100 percent compatibility claim was not valid, because we would have two sets of rules out there for each class. A DM would have to ask a new player, are you playing an Essentials cleric or a regular cleric? After...

    Unconfirmed: More Layoffs at WotC

I survived two rounds of layoffs at my last job before I got caught in the third. After each round, management would hold a meeting or send out an e-mail explaining a rationale. (I worked at a newspaper, so it was all about declining ad sales.) For the ex-WotC employees (if any are still...

    Will o' Wisp's Luring Glow

Yes, it does. I don't have Trollhaunt, so I can't say for sure. But the one in the Compendium does not match the one in MM2, and does have a sustain minor in its Luring Glow. There were other changes between the power descriptions in the Compendium and MM2 as well. And this is the Compendium...

    Will o' Wisp's Luring Glow

Well, ^$(*&% of a %$#*&^%. When I make an adventure, I copy and paste the text of each monster out of the DDI Compendium into Word, so I have it all handy. The version in the Compendium is still wrong, and the one in MM2 is updated, and I never noticed. Sheesh.

    D&D 4E Two Camps of 4e Players (a rant)

I think the order of chapters of the PHB is a problem. We've always had Abilities, Races, Classes in that order in PHBs. But the rules of the game -- the part where you play -- are back in the Combat and Adventuring chapters. I think those should have been chapters 2 and 3, with the classes (and...

    Will o' Wisp's Luring Glow

Um, okay. The MM2 block was the one I was having trouble with to begin with. So whoever said last page that the discussion was pointless... well, no, still confusing for me at least.

Solo, young black dragon, lurker, and level 1 parties.

I ran my party of six first-level characters against a young black dragon in their first adventure. I statted up a version that took his level down by 1 to use in case the party didn't take a short rest between fighting his guards and him, but ended up using the full version. I also had him...

    Roleplaying Artifacts

So I'm thinking of dropping an artifact into my campaign pretty soon. I went looking for guidance on playing the character of the artifact and found nothing in the DMG, the WotC site or anywhere else on the Internet. So, my fellow DMs, what has worked for you? Should my artifact speak aloud...

    Will o' Wisp's Luring Glow

Wait, wait, errata? I checked the WotC site for an update ( Official D&D Updates ) before I posted the question and there is no update for MM2. So clearly it's hiding elsewhere. Where should I be looking?

    Tiamat, 4e, and (Lawful) Evil

Well, yes, I suppose I can. But then I'm also throwing out what's written about Tiamat in 4e, and I'm not sure yet I want to do that. And, like I said, the CE aspects have advantages.

    Tiamat, 4e, and (Lawful) Evil

So I'm running a 4e campaign which features chromatic dragons, leading up to Her Majesty. But I'm finding now that I'm having trouble putting together a picture of what it means to worship Tiamat. • Tiamat, historically, was on the Lawful side of Evil. She was aligned with devils, not demons...

    Will o' Wisp's Luring Glow

(Posting again; first posted over in the P1 thread where Google pointed me to an old discussion.) The Will-o'-Wisp power Luring Glow: Luring Glow (Standard; sustain minor, at-will): Close burst 20; blind creatures are immune; one target in the burst; +11 vs Will; the target is pulled 3 squares...

P1 King of the Trollhaunt Warrens Excerpts

I'm running some will-o'-wisps in my game tomorrow night, and am unsure about Luring Glow. It's a standard, but sustain minor. Does that mean it can turn it on as a standard action, and then attack with it each turn as a minor action until it goes dark (at which point it can no longer sustain)...
