Adding New Classes to a Game

From: "On The Philosophy of Class Design" So there you go. That's what you make a new class for. If your reasons are anything else, you probably actually just want to make a feature variant or a new feat or something, and there's no real reason to make a new class to accomplish that.

    Gaming Pride / Gaming Shame

The first thing people see when they walk into my apartment is a wall and bookshelves full of RPG and gaming stuff. It's right there when you open the door. Why would anyone be ashamed of it and actively hide or conceal their nature? The idea seems silly if not outright dishonest to me.

What do you want to see for your Fantasy Roleplaying System of choice?

That can be said about most every game that involves a party. Seriously. What rpg would you say *doesn't* make you suffer for failing to prioritize your targets and work together with your team? Anyways, those things are just a very small part of what depth of strategic gameplay can involve...

What do you want to see for your Fantasy Roleplaying System of choice?

No need for a new thread, it's a very simple question to answer. There's two broad, primary categories you can divide (mechanical) player skill into. Skill in build, which is the skill required to pick out optimal features and put them on your character sheet, and skill in play, which is the...

What do you want to see for your Fantasy Roleplaying System of choice?

Like Nonlethal Force, I, too, have a new system in the works, ETA a bit more than a year for publishing. Still can't say much about it, other than that it's a complete reimagining of 3rd edition style D&D (mostly only keeping the "it's an adaptable high fantasy system" part), and provides a...

3.5e -- What REALLY needed fixing?

Pssh, I could give a hundred of these. 1) Uneven Progressions hinders customization, particularly multiclassing. 2) Most weapon styles suffer heavily from breaking points. 3) Armor is significantly unbalanced, to the point that there is always one "best" armor for any given class. 4) "Top down"...

[Bo9S] Notes on swordsage in play

Gotta love when people scream "(insert new ruleset here) is overpowered!" (particularly Tome of Battle and Psionics) just because they can't read the simple rules in simple english. :p

Core classes. How are they balanced?

I don't really understand how anyone can talk seriously about them "trying to balance things with these arbitrary assumptions" and such when we're looking at a game that completely throws out the RNG by the end of mid-levels. I mean, really. There are two conclusions to be had. Either A)...

Is D&D 4E too "far out" to expand the market easily?

The problem isn't so much that they have Dragonborn or Tieflings, it's more that they have half the art in the PHB prominently devoted to them (and the prevailing themes of that art besides the racial choices). Basically, it's a presentation issue. They seem to be trying to overemphasize an...

Anyone else wonder why they didn't combine the 3.5 spell system and the 4th edition..

A lot of the extra choices it provided didn't just stem from, say, its ability lists. It stemmed from its emphasis on avoiding breaking points and maintaining even progressions and opening up the viability of multiclassing at far more points, along with things like "Martial Study." Heck...

Players really want the Necromancer? (Forked: Non-published concepts you want)

I know *I* sure as hell do. I've used necromancy in literally dozens of PC characters.

Anyone else wonder why they didn't combine the 3.5 spell system and the 4th edition..

For the record, I'd like to point out that I think the mechanics we saw in ToB were working towards doing this *even better* than in 4e. I feel that 4e is actually something of a watered down offerring on the improvements we were seeing the foundations of in that system.

    Platemail sold here for CHEAP!!

Which is, of course, stupid reasoning. Yay. They took the terrible 3rd ed armor system and, instead of fixing the glaring issues, decided to just make it out that they did it all on purpose, set up the sets by class, and say that there's *supposed* to be a downright best choice for you to pick...

    Zombie Minions are too weak

Yes, actually, and I've seen it done effectively with significantly more than that... In fact, in the zombiegeddon in Sharn campaign, there were dozens of zombies at a point when there were *level 1 NPC classes* in the PC roster (due to a rather unique, low-powered, "organic" way of making PCs...
