Can't the monsters just make a 'monster knowledge' check vs. the PCs?

I'm not sure I buy the Fullblade

I have two fullblade wielders in my current game and I'm playing one in a second campaign. All three are different. The first is a stormsoul genasi swordmage who wields a no-dachi. How does he carry it? Electromagnitisim. It hovers behind his back when he's not using it. For him, it's just a...

Magic Items - What do the rules assume a character has by level?

Since there are no guidelines of when to give out based plussed items vs. non-plussed it's pretty much up in the air. I would say the inherent bonuses are an assumed minimum. And that the maximum could be up to one item of level n+4 each. So the average level would be around n+1.

    Single melee weapon ranger

Get a farbond fullblade, assuming your DM will let you twin-strike with a returning weapon at range.

How do you feel about the only-general-feats direction of D&D?

Yeah, better grouping would help a lot. Many of the existing 'groups' are stupid or narrow (guild feats, anyone?). The split should be based on who finds something useful, not what you want to do (so you wouldn't see a feat to enhance spells that deal acid damage in the CB unless you actually...

How do you feel about the only-general-feats direction of D&D?

No, it doesn't. Do a comprendium search. Melee Training, Skill Training, Skill Focus etc area all only listed once. All Feats - 3078 Feats Names Containing Expertise - 27 feats Focus - 29 (skill focus, weapon focus and implement focus are three feats) Proficiency - 9 feats (It only lists weapon...

    What's changed?

Because they haven't worked out all the bugs yet. Intelegent Blademaster was necessary when the swordmage came out, but by PHB3 they had a generalized solution so they didn't need to include it for the battlemind. And then essentials errata went and broke it and they haven't fixed yet...

How do you feel about the only-general-feats direction of D&D?

At this point I think I'd almost prefer them to stop making feats, entirely. There's over 3000 feats in the game right now. And there was never any thought given to how the feat system works as a whole. Because of that things are a right mess. 4E is becoming a bit of a mass-errataed game...

Rules Cleanup - Weapons and Implements, Bonuses and Plusses

EDIT: I started looking at reasonable house rules for an actual game. But that's not what this thread's for. Heh.

Why are thrown weapons so underwhelming?

Until they make a two-handed superior heavy thrown weapon it won't matter. Everyone will take farbond fullblades and dwarven throwing craighammers. My problem with existing thrown weapons is very simple. Is the baseline for a thrown weapon build like the seeker a Tantalyr (which is really just...

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

I asked, specifically, on the WotC boards for the rule of three questions if it was the case that Turn Undead was nerfed as heavily as it was because of feats and such that can enhance it (well, I was more tactful, but it was still a leading question that'll never get picked). Because that's...

    Monster's defense vs. Player's defense

Monsters and PCs intentionality follow different rules, because they aren't designed to do the same thing. Monsters are disposable and easy to run, because the DM has to handle 3-10 of them in most fights. They also, generally, lack non-encounter resources. PCs are durable and very complex...

Why are thrown weapons so underwhelming?

Uhm, without powers that allow ranged attacks who would it be breaking? Fighters? Rangers (ranged attacks, check)? Rogues get it right because the dagger is crazy. The problem is that thrown weapon builds weren't in PHB1 and thus there's no weapons for them. Seekers, for instance.

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

Also, a thought: does the dev team just tremendously overvalue AoE? Was that frost-cheese eratta way back actually to weaken the wizard, and not the rogue/ranger? I always assumed loosing the ability to use it with area attacks, I assumed the RAI, was a causality to balance out multi-attacks...

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

This is likely what they meant when they said the seeker and the artificer would be 'getting support'. Now they're both just as good as a cleric, see?

Why are thrown weapons so underwhelming?

Thrown weapons (and the world of difference magic makes) are just a rules oversight. Really wish they'd fix it, but what are you going to do.

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

But, if they didn't like pacifist healer (understandable, I hate that build) why nerf all the damage-dealing powers for the old devoted build? Why not the actual powers that build uses? If anything, this is going to encourage ranged Wis clerics to pick up more pacifist powers. Meh. Example...

The Class Compendium articles are great!

You can tell when Mearls became head designer because he always writes the flavor text twice. ALWAYS The Book of Iron Might - Book of Nine Swords - D&D4E under his guidance. I like Mike's work, but someone needs to tell him that one flavor text block is plenty.

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

These nerfs (particuarlly reducing the damage and area on all the devoted build's AoEs) would have been warranted if we still just had PHB1 to play with, where clerics were better than the wizard at a lot of the wizard's own areas of expertise. But given how powered up the wizard/mage has become...
