D&D 4E 4E: What we think we know

Well, I remember AD&D really didn't have a level limit... in 1st or 2nd ed (except for demi-humans and a few classes). In fact, 9th was the "name level" when you could "settle down" and could be argued was close the "cap". Still, they had the H4 module in 2ed that was scaled for 100th level...

    How to deal with goblins

Well, the interesting thing is that if the goblins are "by the book" then they'd be LE in alignment... which makes for an interesting mix with a CG captain... While the captain wants to treat them well and give them "freedoms", they would probably respond better to harsh rules to which...

What do you steal from published settings?

Don't know if this really applies since I use the setting but for me it's the Kingdom of Kalamar setting. If I was to go home brew, I'd definitely pull their pantheon of gods as well as the hobgoblins from that setting. As it is though, I like to use the setting for whatever I'm running.

    Anyone remember Comeliness?

Yup... Comeliness is still in Hackmaster (part of the 7 basic stats). In Kenzer & Cos recently released Aces & Eights (a western RPG), they have the basic 6 stats plus Looks (which replaced comeliness). I like having that distinction between looks and charisma... they may have closer ties...

Why are we trying to make 1st level PCs tougher?

You could always go with the Hackmaster "Kicker" approach... all PCs get an extra 20 hps to start... of course, so do most monsters... still makes encounters tough, but stops the "one hit one kill" idea.

How to stay organized as a Druid?

I used DMGenie (on a laptop). It was great as if I summoned a creature, I could add it VERY quickly... and it handled Wildshaping as it is in the PHB... allowed me to pick ANY animal in the SW (or add my own) and use it quickly.

Wizards of the Coast/Kenzer & Company License Agreements Expiring

Let me say that the Gnomes and Kobolds book is one of my favourites by K&CO and that's saying a lot! I loved the treatment Kobolds got and I thought it really fleshed things out. As a DM I loved having the cultural background and such and I really love the idea of the party "making mistakes"...

    Orcs: How Important Are They?

I love hobgoblins as well, but orcs are great. I love the treatment of both in Kingdoms of Kalamar. The orc is more of the wasteland savages (CE) and more apelike, while hobgoblins are the LE humaniods that have kingdoms that trade with others but still plan to take over the world.

Gaming in the Military - Your Experiences?

When I was in the Canadian Forces we played quite a bit. Sometimes it was D&D but eventually a group of us got playing Shadowrun (1st and 2nd ed) more often. It worked well because you could use "real world" ideas more (although it was a pain to keep telling the military engineers that they...

Why you shouldn't use 5 ft corridors

You could just solve it all by everyone in your party being a gnome with swarmfighting feat. :) Two fighters per square and all the puns you can handle!!! Seriously though, I prefer to have the setting realistically sized... and sometimes it's even smaller than 5' corridors depending on the...

What the hell happened? RHoD (spoilers)

Well, I made things a bit more difficult for my players at the bridge. Since one of the two players had been through that encounter before, i changed it up some. When they arrived, they found the hobgoblins interogating some dwarven prisoners on the other side of the gorge... and getting ready...

Need help with Shambling mounds and Treant combat techniques

Where does it say that your hit points don't chage with the form's con mod? I thought in wildshape you aquired the forms CON and all that goes with it. (Was a real pain for my gnome druid who actually LOST HP when changing into a bear due to his con drop...)

Need advice, Red Hand of Doom

Of course, Koth could flee, and his papers could be in the planning room off the barracks where he can't get back to them... As he leaves, he orders the remaining troops to "finish" the party, but that map gets left behind. When I ran it, the wolf riders came barreling into the barracks and had...

How do you like your gnomes best?

Personally I don't like tinkerer gnomes at all. I was cool for the DL setting and well done, but not my cup of tea. I love gnomes. I still kinda like the illusionist thing, but can accept the bard side of it. In my games, Forest Gnomes have Druid as their favoured class, and Rock Gnomes...

    A multitude of disliked races

I run a game in Kalamar and the base races are: Dwarf: Hill/Mountain/Grey Elf: High/Grey/Wood/Wild/Twilight/Drow Half Elf Gnome Rock/Forest/Deep Halfling LIghtfeet/Golden Human (5 types, but no game difference) Hobgoblin (have own nations in setting) Half-Hobgoblin Half-Orc There are also a...

How do you like your gnomes best?

I used to hate gnomes and loved Birthright for getting rid of them... but then I tried one. it was a game set in the FR and I was going to play a rogue... but I didn't want to do the stereotypical halfling rogue, so I decided to go gnome. It was one of the most enjoyable experiences as a...

    Buzz on Aces and Eights?

or even a non-western fan. I must admit, in the past I really didn't have any interest in a Western RPG, but this one is on my list of games to get and try!
