    Complete Champion excerpts

Break out the ketchup!!!! In the game I'm running (RHOD) the two primary fighters went to the next encounter (a big fight and they knew it) with only 1/2 HP... and the cleric was pretty much fully ready for spell casting... Now, in all fairness they new it would be a tough fight but they also...

Have you decided to change systems?

You may want to consider some ways to "abstract the rules" away from you as a DM. I started using DMGenie to keep track of initiative, but after getting used to it, I found it great for things like encumbrance, bull rush, grappling... etc... all the stuff I don't want to remember the rules for...

Have you decided to change systems?

Well, for me the prep is part of the fun. I use DMGenie though so after I get it initially setup it's pretty easy to do the bookkeeping part and let me focus on the creative.

I hope that means frequently... :uhoh:

Have you decided to change systems?

I'm running 3.5 in the Kingdom of Kalamar setting right now. As a chance of pace, a friend of mine is going to run a Shadowrun 4e game as well. (We used to play SR 1 and 2ed way back when). I enjoy 3.X and am not moving away from it anytime soon... but it's not for everything. :)

    Low Magic Campaigns?

Don't know if someone already suggested this or not, but one idea would be to give the Kingdoms of Kalamar setting by kenzerco a try. It's D20 and written in a "low magic" type of style, but can be scaled however you want. The setting doesn't rely on a lot of magic which is nice. I personally...

Tell me of Kingdoms of Kalamar

Just to add my 2 cp on the races issue... I haven't had an issue with balance in any of my games, although I'll admit they aren't non-human heavy. The biggest thing I like about it is no ECL increase... I really don't like having PC races with an ECL more than 0, so it was nice to see drow...

What I Learnt From Last Night's Session

Nothing saying you can't enchant barding/saddles/bridles/etc for your horse. After all, a "bit of natural armor" or "horseblanket of protection" would make sense in a culture which uses magic and horses... And just to mess with the players "Pink Mane Ribbons of Protection from Arrows"... see...

Can novels make or break a setting for you?

For me, although I sometimes enjoy reading about the world for flavour, I usually find it more of a hindrance than a help... with some exceptions. I'm a big fan on "static timelines" for settings I use. This was one of the big things I liked about the shortlived Birthright setting. They...

Your Experience With Red Hand of Doom

I agree. I'm running this in the Kingdom of Kalamar setting which does Hobgoblins up AWESOME! There are at least two established kingdoms ruled by Hobgoblins and they're a PC race in the setting... Running RHOD there works so well, and will really help my PCs gain a bit more respect for hobgoblins.

The need for social skills in D&D

Ok, here's a great example of how it can work out. In a campaign I was running, one of the characters was an uncharismatic (6 Cha) elven rogue... (Figured as an elf, at least he was still more attractive than humans... he had a LOT of personality issues which is what made him so fun). The rest...

The need for social skills in D&D

I believe in a happy medium... after all, I enjoy the roleplaying, but quite frankly, I don't know anyone who can adequately roleplay an 18+ Cha... just like most players would be hard up to truely roleplay 18+ Int... As a DM I find it hard to roleplay a powerful demon who has 23+ Int... I...

The need for social skills in D&D

Personally, I disagree with this. I think part of the fun of the game is playing the character... which means if you're playing someone with a 6 int, your ideas that you present should reflect this. This is the way the groups I've gamed with have been (focusing on the RP side) and it's been...

    Red Hand of Doom reloaded

I can't wait to start this myself. I had started it once before, but that campaign was aborted so I'm doing it again. I'm running it in the Kingdom of Kalamar setting and it fits perfect there as well. There is a nation of humans who borders a hobgoblin kingdom.. and the terrain almost...

What's the lamest monster you've seen made cool, and how?

Ok... i've got a couple... Sheet Phantom. Yes... a haunted sheet... When kenzerco put out Dangerous Denzien's (their monster book) I was very suprised to see it there... but when I read about it... WOW. They did the history up where it was a sheet or bedclothes of a lover who commited...

Does 3E/3.5 dictate a certain style of play?

Back to the original question... I personally love running my campaign in Kingdoms of Kalamar and like to keep it "rare magic". That is, magic isn't all that common, but when the party gets an item, it's usually pretty good. I still pretty much use the CR system in most cases and really...

New listings on the WotC 2007 product page!

NOpe... :) That being said, I don't have a lot of experience with Eberron. What little I know does sound a bit promising for Drow... at least they have broken some of the stereotypes. I will be the first to admit that the Kalamar take on Drow (known as Shadow Elves) is different, but still...
