    What's wrong with high-level/epic play?

That was, to me a signature problem of 3e/3.5e high-level play. Too much stuff. When you get into near-epic and then epic level play, stat-blocks become cumbersome and voluminous. Creatures have so many abilities, special qualities and power that often I would tend to forget them, sometimes...

    What's wrong with high-level/epic play?

THIS. A thousand times THIS. A 28th level, with six characters, two pets and two followers, combined with stacking powers from classes, prestige classes, magic items, spell effects and who knows what else, the math became tedious in the extreme. Then factor in conditional bonuses, combat...

What was so bad about the Core 2e rules? Why is it the red-headed stepchild of D&D?

That pretty much jibes with my experience and that of my players. We knew TSR had gone out of business and heard that WotC had picked up D&D (which was generally considered a good thing...at least moreso than what happened to Avalon Hill). Most everyone I knew didn't even realize that WotC had...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

I was mostly just curious, since for now my familiarity is limited to the current version of Ubuntu Linux (which is what my Dell Mini9 shipped with) and I was curious what are considered the 'best in breed' these days. I haven't played with generic Gnome or KDE in a couple of years.

What was so bad about the Core 2e rules? Why is it the red-headed stepchild of D&D?

Can you give some examples? Not having been a 2e player, I never saw any of that marketing...only the run-up marketing for 3e to lapsed players.

What was so bad about the Core 2e rules? Why is it the red-headed stepchild of D&D?

We started with Basic D&D and graduated quickly to AD&D between middle-school and high-school. The idea that AD&D was somehow an 'adult' game would have been met with laughter in the early 1980s. D&D, as a rule, was not generally associated with maturity. While it featured a complex ruleset...

Interesting post over at Grognardia today regarding Gail Gygax

I have to admit, I find the tone of the article troubling. There is a sense of entitlement that seems directly at odds with the situation. The author claims that she didn't really know Gary Gygax, but then presumes to imply that she knows his mind at least as well as his wife of more than two...

I'm curious what two GUIs get your vote in this regard.

    How did WoW dethrone Everquest?

Ah. My apologies for mischaracterizing your thoughts. I took that phrase to mean 'they just happened to be in the right place at the right time when the heavens were in alignment just so'. Spot on, then.

    How did WoW dethrone Everquest?

Well, to be technical, the market leader form 1999-2005 was not Everquest, it was Lineage. Which quite literally did 10 times the subscribers of it's closest comeptitor in 2001. But we're not counting them in the hypothetical EQ losing it's throne to WoW idea. But EQ had major mind share in...

    How did WoW dethrone Everquest?

Funny, that's what folks said about Everquest...once. WoW was much more than being lucky at the right time. Quite the opposite, IMHO, and I've never even played the game. WoW has survived and thrived for several key reasons: 1) Continued a legacy from an established and popular franchise...

When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

I think this is merely a case of rose-colored glasses and nostalgia trumping reality. EGG made such pronouncements 'from on high', as it were, exactly BECAUSE many different gamers had long and voiciferuous rules and DM-ing arguments. The letters and forums columns of Dragon, even edited as...

4e modules and lack of empty space

Hear, hear! In my group, we use certain phrases as short-hand. Non-essential details that aren't worth valuable play time to enumerate are generally called 'torch issues'. Which is to say, "do we have enough torches?" or "who is carrying the torch" are questions only rarely asked because...

Spotlight Interview: John Rogers on the Manual of the Planes

John, Glad to hear the Feywild sounds like the sort of place it should be: somewhat scary and alien. Can you give any hints about the role the Fomorians play? Are they just violent comic foils or something far uglier? Oh, and what is the street date for MoP, anyone know?

    I think we're done with 4E

Not for my group. Typically, 3e/3.5e combats will run 6-8 rounds. The end of the combat is effectively determined by round 3, but it can grind on for a while. Especially in combats where three of the players can't hurt the monster, but one can devastate it or something similar, such as some...

    I think we're done with 4E

I find it interesting that people are describing 'the grind' with respect to 4e. My personal experience (which has only included 4e from 1st to 3rd level) runs exactly counter to that idea, since one of my biggst problems with 3e over the last 8 years is 'the grind'. In 3e, combats...

How Many Beers per Gaming Session?

Ah, A HopDevil man, I see. I live about 10 minutes from Victory, but they're really not my thing, unfortunately. I'm more into Troeg's, myself.

Spotlight Interview: John Rogers on the Manual of the Planes

John Rogers is a damned fine writer and his oevure covers a pretty wide base. He's been attached with plenty of decent geek properties and brought a deft hand to many. Many of the best bits of the Transformers movie were his (and many of the stupid parts were not), his story hours here on...

A Brief History of Tolkien RPGs

For the record, Tolkien didn't coin the term orc. He made it mainstream, but he took it from mythology, right along with goblin, ogre and others. There is similar word in Celtic that does mean 'young pig', so there is plenty of wiggle room in the whole discussion. Discussion here. On a...

A Brief History of Tolkien RPGs

Was there a time when you didn't? He's produced some great movies, but few people attribute their success to him. Ask John Fogarty exactly how much he like Saul Zaentz. ;)
