    Those other two pillars

If people had good guidance on how to design such encounters, the encounters need not be fun-sapping. Dramatic consequence and threat to player goals simply need to be employed.

Gnomes! (HUH) What are they good for? Absolutely nothing!

Oh, and inasmuch as language really can, in my opinion give life to a race, my inspiration for gnome language is welsh. It works really, really well! :D I hope that doesn't come across as racist!

Gnomes! (HUH) What are they good for? Absolutely nothing!

Nope! But not all dwarves are axe-wielding warriors. There's just enough of them to give some sort of definition.! Gnomes live in shallow burrow communities under hills in isolated woodland or forested areas. They tend to have a racial genius for mineralogy (particularly precious gemstones)...

Gnomes! (HUH) What are they good for? Absolutely nothing!

Perfect. I particularly like mysterious and elusive for my gnomes; maybe somewhat feytouched in the way elves can be. Where enchantment and high magic defines the spirit of elves, illusion defines the soul of the gnome. Dwarves are warlike and grim. Elves are high and terrible. Halflings are...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Well that's certainly not my argument. I take issue largely with the claim that the system is completely broken because of x,y,z. I don't find most of those reasons given as convincing that the system is broken, and that's a far cry for championing it as a flawless system that cannot be...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Now there's a bandwagon I can lay my hat of d02 on. I strongly agree.

If this post is anything to go by, I'd be in stitches for hours reading it

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Yeah, I saw the reference as a complete abandonment of any pretence that this thread was addressing an issue independent of the Surprising the GM thread :D. There never was a chamberlain. It was a centipede in disguise!

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

How is it that every piece of evidence given so far for the brokenness of the game is debatable?

Awesome. Bonus points if Shrodinger can make a cameo!

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Is this the strength of the evidence that the system is broken? These points are so easy to address that I find it hard to believe that they are being used as evidence for a broken system. With such a diverse system with so many components its not surprising that creative, intelligent and...

Serious question - are you going to invest in D&DNext?

It depends on how compatible with 3.x and AD&D it is. I'm not really looking for a new system, but if its highly backwards compatible, it'd add to what I'm playing and I'd invest. Publishing great adventures and story would be awesome too. Not plot devices for marketing reasons, but stories...

    Yeah I agree with this.

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Its not a strawman cheese weasel (drooooool. ahem. sorry) tho. Can we take for granted that its not always the case? You might not trust everyone's integrity here, but the argument has been presented, and many of us have said that that's not a fair reflection of the way we game. And if the...

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

I don't think its a sidestep; its my response to the caricature of rule 0 as this complex array when its actually the opposite. Carefully arbitrate means we don't need an overly-intricate model, and instead just decide on a case-by-case basis.

Fighters vs. Spellcasters (a case for fighters.)

Not a whole slew of tricks. One trick; "Carefully arbitrate", unless we include ensuring that all the rules are followed, including inconvenient ones, as a trick. In fact, what follows (but I'm too lazy to type) is a discussion of ways a DM can reign in power as well as a discussion on trust...
