Because you quoted it. This sounds to me like you are being sarcastic. I want rules that work at the table, yes. And, yes, I offered a proposal that cites the PHB. It's not a coincidence that the proposal follows from the passages cited. Your interpretation, as you've explained it, does not...

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

Thanks for this. I think we both recognize the same issue. That's precisely not what the passage quoted says. If this is correct, then much more remains unclear for what happens with illusions in combat than the procedure I suggested. You've identified some of the issues here, but there are...

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

Why would you assume that I wrote the tl/dr before the rest of the post? Perhaps there lies the confusion. In the post, I present the reasoning that brings me to the conclusion that I summarized . Not something that I "want", but what the PHB says. There's a section in the OP called...

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

So I read your initial post, pre-edit, before you added the personal attack. I honestly thought your post was meant as a joke. It seems you are serious, though, and so let me ask: What is the result that you think I want? And where do you think I have misread the PHB? I may have follow-up...

"Happy to check it out," says Tommi, offering to run ahead with anyone else interested.

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

Of course everything can be covered by DM fiat, and of course common sense should take a role. At the same time, there has to be a shared understanding of what is expected, especially since the emphasis in the rules is not supported by most people's understanding of what they say. I have no...

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

ha ha ha -- thanks. I have no doubt I am overthinking it. In my experience, the illusion spells aren't fun because of this lack of clarity. They either do anything, or do nothing, and I want there to be some reasonable agreed framework for interpretation, around which creative and fun action and...

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

Sorry -- you can't Attack the illusion (as a game term) -- there's nothing there; it has no AC, no HP. It's always a swing and a miss. The problem is, if that action alone causes the illusion to fade away, then all Study guidleines are lousy.

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

I agree with all of this (and with the point about imitating spells), and each of these aspects makes it harder to suspect the initial illusion, and so more likely to affect how an opponent responds. Thnak you!

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

Thanks for the detailed response! Everything you say for this point is true, but not relevant to solving the low-level problems that the rules present. I love these ideas, and yes out of combat illusions can do lots of fun things. Totally fair, and so we come to the basic tension that (in my...

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

Thanks for the responses! Fair enough, and a roll to see how an NPC reacts is totally fair. Something like this totally works, in that both sides then have a reasonable shot at a "free" investigation check. That's the degree of symmetry that I think is reasonable (even if the information is...

    D&D (2024) Illusion Magic in 2024

While there is more information in PHB 2024 about Illusions thanin 2014, there still isn’t enough, and problems persist in play. What follows is my trying to make sense of the rules so that illusions remain effective but are not game-breaking. Thoughts welcome. I am trying to get playable rules...

Assault on Dragonspear (5e PBP) IC

"C'mon, everyone. Let's press on," says Tommi as he sets the pace, whistling a happy tune as he does so. In Tommi's mind, it's obvious, though he doesn't speak this aloud lest Sir isteval gainsay his idea. Tommi wants to attract the trolls if at all possible. He believes, whatever the...

Tommi is keen to head south. "We know where we're going, and we are aware of the major threat on the road. That means we just have one thing to worry about, right?" He is not sure if this argument will convince anyone else, but he's pretty sure it's solid.

D&D (2024) You Can Now Pre-order Eberron: Forge of the Artificer

I really like the idea of slimmed-down rules books for players. $30 ain't nothing, but it's more likely something players will invest in (even if it proves to be only, say, 120 pages and not 160). And it sets a pattern for future books for different settings, as we've already expected...

Assault on Dragonspear (5e PBP) IC

"No problem!" says Tommi enthusiastically, returning all of Sir Isteval's money. "We've just borrowed old Carl, and it would be nice to give 'im back, if we can. When we're done." He explains, "The village itself is under attack and getting ready to defend itself. There are some trolls to the...
