    D&D 5E Katana in 5th edition - finesse?

One of the great things about 5th Edition is that there are no physical descriptions of individual weapons, so the only limit to how your weapons look is common sense. It's pretty easy to say "My shortsword is longer than normal, carved with ornate elvish runes all along the wicked curve of its...

    D&D 5E Katana in 5th edition - finesse?

You're in luck! Elves already get free proficiency with a 1d6 finesse weapon. It's called a shortsword, and it's perfect for dex characters. This leaves the longsword as a tool of the stronger-than-average elves.

    D&D 5E Complete Basic Game

The general guideline people seem to be throwing around for the playtest/LotCS monsters is +1 AC, +1 damage, and +50% hp.

D&D 5E D&D 5e Basic Set: Things that make you go "what?!"

Alternatively, you might have the character take 1 point of damage for every number they're short on the DC 20 roll to represent the manacles mangling their hands/wrists as they strain to break free. Roll a 6? 14 damage.

D&D 5E Unexpected but (mostly) awesome new rules in Basic

I think under 5E, a bastard sword would be mechanically identical to a longsword.

    D&D 5E [5e] Parties whose characters all share a background - thoughts?

The sage's researcher ability is very much written to allow for DM discretion, so you could always have them roll/pick a specialty from the Sage table (Alchemist, astronomer, librarian, etc) and have each PC's Reasearcher ability focus on their area of expertise. Need to know where to find...

D&D 5E 5e is dead to me! Almost, TWF issue..

Thank you! That is a case of a very simple item reskinning, so it doesn't really affect the game or plot. Although I just had a hilarious image pop into my head of a fighter who (in character) thinks that his shield is a dagger. "You see a tall human enter the room carrying a longsword and a...

D&D 5E 5e is dead to me! Almost, TWF issue..

Because like I already said, it would be treated 100% as a shield as mechanics go. Any player who tried to argue "But I'm proficient in daggers so I should treat it as a normal weapon attack!" would be politely asked to stop trying to game the rulings. They can have a dagger for off-hand...

D&D 5E 5e is dead to me! Almost, TWF issue..

I don't see a problem with using a shield as an improvised weapon either, especially considering D&D Basic lacks any other rules that would allow a shield bash attack.

    D&D 5E SRD5 - A Clone of Part of D&D 5E Basic

I imagine a particularly epic C&D is being written already. Wish I could see it. :p

D&D 5E 5e is dead to me! Almost, TWF issue..

That is one valid option. Personally, since I would be treating the dagger identically to a shield mechanically, if the player wanted to throw or attack with it I would use the rules for an Improvised Weapon (Pg. 46) with the justification that a dagger made for parrying won't be balanced for...

    D&D 5E Thoughts on a future product

This. I have no interest in trying to progress past 20, and if a campaign I was running got that far, characters definitely would not just level up to 21 for another +1 to hit or whatever. By level 20 I'm imagining rewards along the lines of magic items and artifacts, lands, titles, castles...

D&D 5E 5e is dead to me! Almost, TWF issue..

Easiest solution with the current rules would be to "reskin" a shield as a dagger. You wouldn't get a bonus attack, but +2 AC is nothing to laugh at.

D&D 5E Quick thought on Barbarian Rage

I was thinking about how this ability will work in the new system, and I hope they avoid both a straight up + to str/attack/damage and using the advantage mechanic, which it seems the're trying to remove from class abilities somewhat (the change to Fighter's Indomitable Will comes to mind.) My...

    D&D 5E Weapon oddities

This is not a rule that I can find in D&D Basic. The only restriction for Small characters is Disadvantage on attacks using weapons with the "heavy" trait. Small characters can use a Longsword one handed for 1d8 or two handed for 1d10.

D&D 5E Unexpected but (mostly) awesome new rules in Basic

"Proficiency comes in a few varieties but all except armor do the same thing. . . . Armor proficiency, however, works a little differently. You still get the [armor's AC] bonus to your Armor Class when wearing the armor [if you are not proficient] , but you get disadvantage on any ability...

D&D 5E Saving Throws design choice

pokereleran : seems like a lot of people are upset that there are now 6 saves but really only 3 are used. Plans to address this in the PHB? mikemearls : the saves are a DM tool as much as anything. That said, we handed out skill proficiencies knowing there is a disparity. So each class has one...

D&D 5E Can you use Grapple with TWF?

In the 5e weapons table Unarmed Strike does not have the 'light' quality and is also unrelated to grappling.

D&D 5E Can you use Grapple with TWF?

It doesn't seem like it. TWF says "When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand." You have to attack with a light weapon in...
