Here's That Official Conversion Document You've Been Waiting For!

Honestly, the document is largely what I've been doing already. "Eyeball it, and keep 5e's idiosyncrasies in mind." Other than monsters. When I've needed a monster for my game from a previous edition, I've generally just built it using the old monster's special abilities but the DMG's...

D&D 5E SHORT conversion document up and monsters by type

The Angry GM on D&D Encounters

I'm not entirely sure. I do know that it would be clear, concise, and rely heavily on FAQs and establishing a shared vocabulary. They're in that business already. When they banned house rules and required that everything follow the written adventures, season guides, and PHB, with very limited...

The Angry GM on D&D Encounters

What I think is needed most: A redesign of the Adventurer's League site so that it is actually the place - the single, focused place - one goes to learn about Adventurer's League. It needs a full set of the rules and guidelines. It needs, if not forums, at least a feedback form. It needs a...

The Angry GM on D&D Encounters

... When I say that the big thing I want to see change is how communication happens rather than the specific rules, and the answer I get is that the rules can't be changed except in specific windows, my faith that communication can or will be improved takes a marked downturn.

The Angry GM on D&D Encounters

The biggest changes that are needed aren't in the rules - though Ao knows that the rules also need a huge overhaul. It's in the structure of AL and how information is passed from WorC to AL to players and DMs. That shouldn't require waiting for a new season to start to implement - and if it...

D&D 5E Prepping for the 5e gaming licence

I loved Iron Heroes. It was a beautiful mess of a game, and I had a ton of fun with it in spite of - and occasionally because of - its being inherently broken. I think the biggest issue with the OGL was embodied in Iron Heroes, Arcana Evolved, and Pathfinder, though... the very best stuff was...

The Angry GM on D&D Encounters

I'm actually kind of done excusing the AL staff for the problems with Adventurer's League. The problems do lie mainly on the WotC/contracted adventurer developer side, but the AL staff - on Facebook, on the WotC forums, and here - have a single habit that makes the issues Adventurer's League's...

Sword Coast Legends is not D&D

I was rather disappointed by that too... I was hoping to see the subclass system implemented; instead we got this weird skill tree system that's just baffling. Actually... subclasses were the big 5e innovation I was looking forward to playing about with in a video game.

5E conversions for player races from Monte Cooke's Arcana Evolved/Unearthed

And for the Giant. Chi-Julud - which would give a temporary size increase - is also planned to be a feat, but thus far nobody in my group has expressed the slightest interest in playing a giant (the Diamond Throne is primarily an antagonist faction in my campaign - the theme is colonialism, with...

5E conversions for player races from Monte Cooke's Arcana Evolved/Unearthed

Here's my rules conversion for the Faen. I'll note that I did the Spryte transformation as a feat; I'll add that at the end. Game Rule Information Ability Score Adjustment: Dexterity +1 Subrace: Choose Loresong or Quickling. Size: Small Slippery Mind: You gain Advantage on saving throws...

D&D 5E Prepping for the 5e gaming licence

I'm not sure why a license is necessary. The vast bulk of the gaming industry doesn't offer licenses (I've certainly never seen one for a White Wolf/Onyx Path or a Steve Jackson game); why is WotC expected to offer their work up for others to use to turn a profit (and, in the case of Paizo...

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

I'm not sure what my feelings are about adding PrCs to 5e. The mechanic was an absolute mess in 3.x, and I don't want to see PrCs (or feats, for that matter) expand in role the way they both did in WotC's first edition. On the other hand, the prereq system here? That I like. The Rune Scribe can...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Comparison to 3.5e

Gold is definitely more a story reward in 5e than a character-power reward, once the fighter's got their plate and the wizard's nabbed a few spells. I rather like that... it gives me more choice as to how my characters spend their gold. I've had my Paladin rebuild ruined shrines and my Abjurer...

D&D 5E DMG's definition of "Deadly" is much less deadly than mine: Data Aggregation?

One thing I think is interesting is the question of expectations: What is "hard" or "deadly" for a given group? With some groups I played with back in my AD&D days, an encounter wasn't "hard" unless they were scrounging for wealth to pay for a resurrection spell for someone afterward, while in...

    Red Sorcerer

Added that to the ability description.

    Red Sorcerer

I kinda wish that the game had a limiter on mod-to-cantrips the way it has one on multiattack. I rather like the idea of being able to get mod to cantrips from other classes, but there's no really elegant way to do that and also avoid double-mod-to-cantrip.

    Weird Cursor Behavior

No on both. I think it does have to do with formatting. After more experimentation, it seems to jump back to the last time bold/italic/underline was toggled.

    Parent - New 5e Background

I'm not sure I'd use this in D&D. On the other hand, in an Urban Arcana/d20 Modern game? Yes. All the yeeeeessss.

    5E Platypus

Here's a different layout for the Platypus's attacks: Multiattack. The giant platypus makes one Bite and one Spur attack. Bite. Melee attack, reach 5'. +5 to hit, one target. Hit: 1d8+3 Piercing damage. Spur. Melee attack, reach 5'. +5 to hit, one target. Hit: 1d8+3 piercing damage, and the...
