Green Flame, Booming Blade as go to

Hello All, So I have often discussed and designed melee focused warlocks. All have been blade pact. None have taken fighter at first. I am a rebel like that. A typical suggestion is that I used Eldritch blast. Here is the deal: I find it cookie cutter and boring as a main attack and...

    Power is Relative

I am usually only a few ideas ahead in terms of encounters. I have a fairly detailed world (sans map!) and the story almost writes itself but I might try to do what you are doing. What I LOVE about the approach though is the sense of wonder and danger. Players should know and try to be...

    Celestial Pact Warlock--front line duty

Yeah and actually I might opt for a paladin in the near future now that you mention it. It would be better at the thing I am thinking of doing in some respects. However, I like playing a bit against type for fun and am wondering if a celestial pact warlock can get in there and survive with a...

    40 years...

love your story! I have played for close to 37 years. it has been a huge part of my life...it faded in grad school but now its back. honestly, it helped me become a better reader as a child and solidified friendships i still have. i have played with my core group over 30 years with some...

How Involved Should The DM Be As A Warlock's Patron?

I like a mutual relationship. I developed a fallen angel patron for my warlock (fiend pact). The character thinks it is simply an angel, but he is deceived. I play him as I wish and then the DM sort of adds things about visions or messages that enhance the roleplay experience. What I would...

    Celestial Pact Warlock--front line duty

You make good points and thanks for the experiences. My group does not consult one another about classes at all. We design a character and play. So the real issue is wanting to play a good warlock regardless of anything else but wanting to know if they can be effective as a blade pact. I...

    Celestial Pact Warlock--front line duty

I think you miss the point of the differences. While a cleric can heal themselves in combat, that is their whole action. Meanwhile, the celestial pact is potentially swinging a maul twice with lifedrinker and later thirsting blade. Perhaps they also throw up a tomb of levistus to soak up a...

    Celestial Pact Warlock--front line duty

Hello gang, Just was looking over the celestial pact warlock. I play other warlocks but a friend wants his family to play in a campaign of do-gooders and this warlock might be a good choice for me on all fronts. My question: has anyone thought about the Celestial Patron with a blade pact...

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

well I had not given that a ton of thought, but you are right. Each would get the prof bonus on a hit.

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

Honestly, the other reason I was interested in wizard was for rituals. Pact of the tome would supply those as well. Not sure why, but was trying to go PHB+1 and hence avoided GFB/BB. Its a home campaign, so I guess that rule does not apply. Will have to consider that route a bit more...

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

I think this is a good spell to use--thematic and perfect if I was to need to harvest some healing while fighting! My take on this would be that you could use it as a charisma based weapon in lieu of another. Not sure if I would want to give that up however. I will keep it in mind though...

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

I could in fact go for the chain pact...or ask for a pet. The former might be a better idea. However, I really wanted to see if I could play a melee centric warlock The story is that the character's family (a barony) and the lord's advisor (a wizard) are killed. The character dabbled in...

D&D 5E Duergar and "nonstandard" races

I mean that is how I see duergar---they are certainly shocking to other dwarves but otherwise are strangely hued crabby dwarves to many others. At the same time, I can envision some rural agrarian areas where anything but humans might be talked about.

Gygax IP To Be Made Available For Video Games

Don't agree about pen and paper being obsolete at this point. However, I am glad something about this was posted. I am happy to see anything Gygax did succeed. I owe him a lot!

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

Very good, then. I also should have added that I was referencing a hex via a level one wizard slot. I do not like using higher slots for hex since I do not like eldritch blast/hex combos and like higher level spells generally. What I am trying to do is find a different viable way to use this...

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

I note the terms "Hide" and "exploit." Ok thanks for the input. I asked for opinions and you have kindly obliged. It's hard to get tone from internet but you seem frustrated. Here is to your future gaming free of scoundrels trying to cheat!

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

we are talking about two different things. I am talking about the 1st level spell, hex as used with a weapon. It will never net 10 per kill, only 2 or 3.

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

sure. but as to overpowered? I don't think healing two to three with a hex would be that much. I might however go with hex and the invocation maddening hex (I think is the one) that does area damage in effect. I do believe that would work. I would use a lowly 1st level wizard slot for that...

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

Actually grim harvest is related to level of the spell and so if casting a 4th level necromantic warlock spell (blight maybe?) it would garner 12 hit points. To that I would add the hexblade curse if appropriate of warlock level (at least 7 in that case) plus CHR. As to spells, I would have at...

    Vampiring with necromancy, warlocking

Hello gang, Quite by accident I have found a little synergy which might be fun to improve upon...ideas appreciated. I am playing a hexblade who will primarily melee (no EB invocations). Due to story he was going to take a level of wizard (for the flavor of a raven familiar). That is when I...
