D&D 5E DMing "Out of the Abyss"

A ton if your group is going to be very stringent with rations.

D&D 5E DMing "Out of the Abyss"

I gave zingbobco000 exp for his post because having started DMing live with Princes of the Apocalypse I can tell you despite my problems (up to 9 players per game) it was a much easier book to read and since you are above ground you can do lots of fun sandbox stuff that will come more easily to...

D&D 5E Out of the Abyss - No Drizzt afterall?

"Shucks <insert famous character template> you slipped pulling your pants up near the hole in the ground that is your makeshift bathroom and hit you're head. Now you just babble on about a rectangle with an upside down "Y" and a horseless carriage who thinks he's a <random class>. What's that...

D&D 5E Whimsy in your game?

The point of the Underdark is that it is dreary and dangerous. Enter (for 1 season only) MADNESS AND INSANITY! Insanity is not an alignment. In play it brings everything somewhat more towards neutral. Therefore I like it a lot!

D&D 5E DMing "Out of the Abyss"

Ok 1 more...Two other DMs helped me make madness cards and an NPC sheet with the short 1 line description and their picture. We handed it out to the groups and it really drove them to talk to them. We made it through about half and we'll be breaking out soon. Think about the adventure. It is...

D&D 5E DMing "Out of the Abyss"

If any DM thinks the adventure asks for to much randomness and doesn't have the time to fill it I offer two suggestions and why! 1) level the characters to 3 or 4 quickly. I have 7 people and all but one are level 3. This is an encounters group and due to d&d release issues we only had time to...

D&D 5E DMing "Out of the Abyss"

Encounter tables are guides. I have an encounter imagined that has the group walk up to a giant mushroom lit by moss. There are several spiders moving about and the party can easily sneak by...they will probably decide to do this given the chase mechanic....they roll perception and 10 shows a...

D&D 5E How fast do you play D&D?

I saw the topic and thought: "I roll my dice a quarter mile at a time." I DM three groups: 1 Online game - Dragonlance since April. Lvl 4 1 Online game - Forgotten Realms since Feb. Level 4 Wed. Adventurer's guild: Lvl 2 currently. We start OotA tomorrow. We did some pre-adventures where I...

D&D 5E What Defenses Might Be Found in a Noble's Manor?

Whenever my group sees a gargoyle statue they say aloud "No. That is a gargoyle. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200." So what you could do is have a gargoyle head relief a few feet from a door. Players case the joint and see that the owner fiddles with something in the gargoyle's mouth. It's...

    D&D 5E Scrolls in 5e; loving this!

Make it so Scrolls use simplified wording to trigger. The magic is masked and casters can't copy them into spell books. Then Spell Scrolls are the only ones a caster can cast into their spell book. You can also allow Spell Scrolls to contain magic at higher than base levels or have a rule that...

Wand of Viscid Globs: Straight Out of Out of The Abyss!

There are spells emulating daylight that I expect casters of the Underdark would use to blind, distract and confuse. Looks like it will be pretty common place in my caster NPC's spell book(s) now. If you as DM find this bring OP the UD is fortunately full of sneaky things. The party can find...

D&D 5E Rogue Stealth in Battle

Thanks guys. Great advice. So when she asks me if her stealth roll makes it I will just be quiet and play accordingly. I don't set out to kill my players but in order to feel epic there has to be some danger. Taking the passive perception of monsters into account I can start giving her thrills...

D&D 5E Rogue Stealth in Battle

I have an arcane trickster in my group who uses her bonus action to hide. She rolls and checks with me and I just think "yeah. Something is there larger than you so you succeed." I don't mind her hiding to get advantage for sneak attacks but I wonder at it's necessity. I'm not sure what to do...

    D&D 5E Famous last words

That was one hell of an arrow to the knee... Great Ceasar's ghost! Didn't feel a thing...oh no wait.... Never got to see...Dinseylan...ugh Mom always said an elf woman would be death of me *psychic damage - hold your hands wide* I've got a headache this big! The light! It's....mauve?

    D&D 5E Sage Advice August 17th

I think the sneak attack damage not applying to unarmed strike is because at a certain level the monk's hands count as magical items. Monk/Rogue synergy is pretty good and allowing them to have magical attacks without magical weapons is difficult to manage in low magic campaigns where magic...

D&D 5E What Defenses Might Be Found in a Noble's Manor?

Oops! I just realized you weren't looking for traps. I got it reversed lol. Oh well. Maybe someone can still use these: I have two options which I think would be pretty powerful centerpiece security items for a wealthy noble or magic user of 6th level. Neither are lethal. The first option is...

D&D 5E The good, bad, and ugly of the Wish spell

I haven't had to deal with the Wish spell but I do look forward to it. If it is used to duplicate a spell I would probably make it a spectacular effect and turn the tide of the situation/battle. If the Wish is outrageous then I'll hamstring it but give the player(s) an opportunity for...

D&D 5E Theatre of the Mind or Miniatures?

When the party is travelling, in town or about to siege a fortress I make everyone stand up and go outside. We being d20's and if I have a map I will pass it around. Battle is done with Minis but sometimes (large army battles) a strategic map and mostly theatre of the mind suffices.

    D&D 5E What's your Master Villain like?

I had a rival band consisting of at least 1 lvl bard and various classes 2 levels higher than the PCs. Even though only one guy was a bard the whole group hated them because they too were adventurers, had the adoration of the city and always just a little better at everything than they were.
