    Rule-of-Three: 07/03/2012

And what I'm say9ing is Themes or builds or weapon preference are all just themes with different names. So playing "without themes" would be playing without TWF. By making them themes, it allows the added bonus of letting a druid or wizard choose TWF as well.

    Rule-of-Three: 07/03/2012

If themes are optional, then why are you trying to make 16 different versions of a fighter? You can't have everything be optional and then complain that there aren't enough options. Maybe the fighter has to pick a theme to represent their fighting style and then all other themes are optional.

Losing Interest in the D&D Next Playtest?

    1. "I don't think it's unreasonable for consumers of a product to criticize the speed at which it is produced. " We aren't consumers! we are getting something for free. 4e players are consumers. 3e players were consumers. D&D Next playtesters are playtesters. We aren't owed one single gram of...

    Losing interest....

If Monsters and Fighters and Magic Items and Tactical and Narrative were all done when we got the first playtest, what would we have to give feedback for? Wouldn't people be upset that their opinions weren't being listened to because they didn't remake the fighter the way they wanted it? If I...

D&D 5E What do you want in the first D&D Next adventure path?

Point 1. WotC's 4e Adventure Path was Dragon-centric. Scales of War. As in, Dragon Scales. I know it wasn't the best but it was just done. Point 2. I don't want a sandbox Adventure Path. I want an AP that makes it easy for me to DM straight from the page. I like the idea of Bandits and keeping...

    Rule-of-Three: 07/03/2012

What if TWF and Sword and board were themes AND the fighter got 2 themes? Then you aren't giving anything up if you want to be a Sage Fighter or Healer Fighter AND you could be a cleric that takes TWF. Problem solved?

    D&D 5E Armor in Next

Why can't different armour offer different advantages, just like different weapons do? Right now people can choose to wield a Halberd, or Dagger, or Rapier all for different reasons. Qualities are different; off-hand, reach, finesse, slashing, etc. Why don't we add stuff to Armour so people...

Tactical Narrative Combat Modules in D&D Next

Should I know or care what Forge is? (I just looked it up, but let's pretend I didn't have access to the internet when I was making this post, or something like that.)(In fact, I've been playing D&D for 24 years and never heard of Forge-isms until this last week.) If they say narrative is...

Tactical Narrative Combat Modules in D&D Next

I also want more gamist rules, however, it's nice that they can add in narrative (or simulationist would be a better word) rules. Basically, we shouldn't argue about the word they use and more about the rules those words represent. And we shouldn't argue about those rules because everyone...

Stand-up from prone is a joke

Remember, prone isn't just use 5' to stand up. It also grants Advantage to those melee attacking it. So don't discount it, slobo777. But I agree, that 5' is too little. I can't come up with what is just right. Hlaf movement penalizes fast creatures. but might be the easiest. 10' or even 15'...

    Wait, when were there surveys?

Yes. My group received an e-mail titled, "D&D Next Playtest Survey" on May 31st. It contained a link to a SurveyGizmo survey. However, it does state that the survey runs from May 31 to June 13th. So that survey is over. I would check your entered e-mail and contact customer service. Sorry you...

Tactical Narrative Combat Modules in D&D Next

I don't understand. The Dwarf Fighter has a +6 to attack. So if I was fighting a Wizard, AC 11, with a -5, I still only have to roll a 10 or higher to hit. And it goes prone. People then complain that prone is useless because they just stand back up. But while prone everyone gains Advantage...

[Skills] Solutions to the oblivious rogue problem

I agree, build a better rogue is the answer. If the Rogue had a 14 WIS and 8 INT would we even be having this conversation? Is there anything that the rogue uses INT for in the playtest?

Did the internet change your mind?

What's the difference between talking about things on the internet and talking with your group? It's just s different size. Doesn't the way my DM attacks me with 25 kobolds or doesn't RP the chieftain also influence my playtest experience? What the internet does for me is that it validates my...

How many themes do we need?

Mike Mearls, said that themes give feats, but feats could be chosen separately if one wants to. So RPers can pick a theme and then use the feats as provided and Min/maxers could pick feats and make-up a theme name around those. Maybe even, like some MMOs and 4e D&D, there will be builds for...

Reporting on a 2-hour playtest session

Agreed. Wizards make great Spear-cushions. And for a party of 4, 3 goblins at a time is going to be extremely easy. Try 18 rats and 12 kobolds and let us know. Or 8 Hobgoblin Warriors and 3 Hobgoblin Archers. I think your opinion will change.

    ...

We were given supplies worth up to 10 gp. My Rogue borrowed the Crossbow and Bolts from the Fighter, since (like was common, apparently), the Fighter didn't want the crossbow. The Elf Wizard wanted to throw away his torches, since he could already cast Light (again, apparently this is...

    Goblins! A Playtest Report.

While I agree that you could probably just put them last in initiative, I believe there will be feats that add to your initiative. So it might be possible to gain +5 to initiative, there by being able to act more often if surprised. Or a feat that makes you "aware" that gives you only -10 to be...

    Rule-of-Three: 06/12/2012

It's a money sink. Just like the Healing kits or ammo. And a plot device. If the DM wants you to be able to cast spells, your pouch is always full. If the DM needs to lock you up and throw you in a dungeon, your pouch is out of bat guano. Sorry Charlie. I for one welcome "rules" that give me...

Yet another houserule for overnight healing

I'm leaning towards "recover half your hit points" for a long rest. That way, if you stay above "bloodied", for lack of a better term, you are at full the next day. You were just winded or demoralized during your encounters. But if you really took a beating, and were down to 3 or 4 HP when you...
