    Goblins! A Playtest Report.

Ray of Frost is very powerful, and opens up a can of worms to boots. Hadn't had any problems, but I see your reasoning. I really don't like the -20 to init on surprise. What didn't you like? If they aren't woken up or injured, what is the duration of Sleep? Forever, till they starve to...

Yet another houserule for overnight healing

Yes, a Healer's kit is needed. But keep in mind, you don't have to be a healer, cleric or herbalist to BUY a Healer's kit. It's a money sink to keep things going and even. You have to pay the hefty price of 25gp to heal 10x. Something to keep in mind, is that D&D Next is much more lethal than...

    Some short playtest notes

How many healing potions did the group have? If they have a near unlimited amount, than yes, waiting until negative is a good plan. In our playtests, we've had one, at the most two if we found an extra. So dying was a bad tactic.

Does Anyone Else LOVE the new Detect Magic?

Well, so far there are no books to pay for, so I'm looking forward to seeing what those books have. Through the playtest and the feedback, we are helping to fill those books. Even with the "make up your own" edict from Gygax, the original DMG book had 200+ pages. We got 9.

Dwarves vs. Zombies: A Mathematical Exploration Just For Fun

Wouldn't the cleric use Turn Undead and be done with this fight in about Round 4? But otherwise, great test. And interesting write-up.

Does Anyone Else LOVE the new Detect Magic?

Don't tell me how to roleplay!!!!!!! What if I don't want to play exciting and interesting? Your rules are too restrictive to my game.

Has anyone broken down Races and Classes?

Yes, I think so. I might have to wait until we have one more round of characters so we can compare. But I think it's pretty close.

    Fragmentation Fears

I can't articulate what is trying to be said here that people are missing. Yes. A DM set the rules in every other version. However, now there are specific rules (modules) that people will look for. Like I didn't know I was missing Module A in my 3e game but now that it is prominent and I'm...

Has anyone broken down Races and Classes?

Gianni, that was the reason I started this thread. We've playtested level 1 and level 3 last weekend, so we wanted to do something a bit different this weekend. So, I'm working on splitting the races and classes and backgrounds and themes. What I've noticed so far, if you want a really different...

    Fragmentation Fears

I had the exact same idea as the OP. But I'm starting to feel more ok as I talk to people.

Has anyone broken down Races and Classes?

Please don't derail my carefully built thread. I'm pretty sure there is another thread for racial options.

Does Anyone Else LOVE the new Detect Magic?

Doesn't a spell take an action to cast? I'm pretty sure. Pg. 23, bottom right paragraphs. Casting time. I don't think a wizard can cast it every round AND do other stuff. I also agree it can't go through walls. And I would like to know how DMs actually used Detect Magic in other versions before...

Has anyone broken down Races and Classes?

Oh right. I added that on my list but didn't post it here. So, we think weapon proficiency gives a character a +2, but Fighters get +3, right?

Has anyone broken down Races and Classes?

Do you think that's a Dwarf bonus?

Has anyone broken down Races and Classes?

Here's what I think I know that isn't listed: All +2 for weapon proficiency Dwarf: +1 die to Warhammer +1 die to Greataxe +1 to AC with medium/heavy armour +1 to STR or +1 to CON Halfling +1 die to Sling +1 to DEX Elf +1 to Magic Attacks +1 to INT Human +1 to Any Stat +1 to every stat...

    1 Minute Duration Spells

Tracking 10 rounds isn't difficult, just fiddly and unnecessary, in my opinion. "1 Encounter" does the same thing, but we aren't allowed to use "Encounter Powers" as a term in 5e so 1 minute works for me. Just because WotC isn't using 4e terms in 5e, doesn't mean mine or your table's can't.

Questions from our sessions (updated for 9/7 session)

How was it determined in your previous games? The DM has always decided who gets Surprise. I don't believe you can share a square. You can move through but you can't stop. However, I like your call. With Lowlight, the Dwarves and Elf can see in the dark, it's just shadowy. No. You get 1...

    So I played tonight...

Remember, "only the last 2 editions" does constitute the last 12 years, or about 1/3 of the life of D&D. Thank you for the time you took to write the AP. I disagree with most of it, but I do so civilly.

    The "Smell Test"

Great poll. And exactly how I've been reading the forums as well. 4e is 50/50, 3e is pretty ok, and 90% of 2e are excited by it. Sounds about right to me.

    1 Minute Duration Spells

Fitz, you didn't convince me, but that's because I already agree with you. 1 minute is synonymous with 1 encounter in these rules. If it said 10 rounds, I would be more annoyed. As for anecdotal evidence, we have run 2 encounters with kobolds, 1 with kobolds and rats, and 3 with orcs. None of...
