    ESPN Calls Role-playing "Bad Fantasy"

Lol I'm a big sports fan and even I think fantasy sports is much more nerdy than rpgs...

    D&D 5E Would Sub-class Feats Solve a Problem? (Is there a problem?)

For me personally, subclasses are one of the most frustrating parts of the 5E system because they don't really offer any choice. All they offer is the illusion of choice, because for the most part they don't change much about the class at all. The few times I've played rather than DM, people...

    D&D 5E Would Sub-class Feats Solve a Problem? (Is there a problem?)

I don't think the issue is that subclasses are similar to each other, I think the issue is that subclasses don't give the parent class a different feel for the most part. Every Fighter feels the same, ditto for Barbarian, Paladin, Wizard, etc. Some subclasses are different enough (Moon and...

    D&D 5E Would Sub-class Feats Solve a Problem? (Is there a problem?)

I totally agree that Subclasses just don't do enough to distinguish themselves from each other. I don't believe feats are the answer though, because of the bizarre way the system firewalls them off (they're optional AND you have to give up an ASI? Ugh) and severely restricts access to them...

D&D 5E The classes that nobody wants to play

In our game the only class that nobody even considered playing is Sorcerer, because it's mechanically the worst arcane caster. Also, nobody plays Fighters beyond a one level dip for casters to get armor proficiency and Con saves. I'm surprised Warlocks got so much hate on this thread, my group...

Tactics And Combat In Fantasy RPGs

The comparisons in this article are flawed. Whether you run the ball or pass it, football is still the ultimate team sport. If you're going to compare football to an edition of D&D, it would be 4E, because everything in that system encouraged teamwork. The "individual showboating" you...

    D&D 5E Eldritch Knight

EK is serviceable but is very much a one trick pony: Shield spell/Absorb Elements is basically all the class has going for it. On the plus side, you will be very hard to hit. On the negative side, done people think spamming the same spell over and over again is dull. That's up to you to decide...

D&D 5E What Races (classes) do you allow or disallow in your campaign?

Threads like this remind me why there are so many "bad DM" threads out there. It's the DM's job to create an atmosphere of fun, with help from the players. It is NOT the DM's job to beat the players over the head with asinine restrictions based on what he or she prefers to play. There are too...

D&D 5E Does any one else think staff is overpowered and houserule it?

5E has arcane and divine casters who wipe their asses with reality, but a dude swinging a stick at someone is OP? Wow, I can just see how this would play out in combat: Bad Guy Leader: "NO! Forget the old dude with the pointy hat who just incinerated 20 of us with a Fireball, GET THE GUY WITH...

D&D 5E How has your personal experience/expertise affected rulings?

Ah that makes sense. We were rolling checks for most things because that's how we thought the system was supposed to work. After a few sessions, we abandoned that cause it was a terrible experience and I went with the passive checks system instead.

D&D 5E How has your personal experience/expertise affected rulings?

Personally I find the skill system in 5E ludicrously unrealistic, it's much too difficult to succeed on an "average" DC 15 check. To me, if you're "proficient" in a skill, then average should be damn near automatic. Only high difficulties should pose any problems. If you have about a 50/50...

D&D 5E What Races (classes) do you allow or disallow in your campaign?

As a DM I try not to ban anything unless there's a specific story reason why it wouldn't work or the race/class in question is horribly broken. In my view it's a bad DM who bans things because of personal taste. It's not a DM's job to point out to players what they should and shouldn't like. If...

    Pulling the plug

I'm currently running 5E. My group really wanted to play it and I didn't. I tried playing a character for a few sessions and hated it. After the delicious crunchiness of 4E and Pathfinder (I'm a mechanics guy) I couldn't deal with the simplicity of 5E. I would get really bored during games so I...

    Pulling the plug

5E left me cold as well. I absolutely love both Pathfinder and 4E, but 5E was a massive disappointment for me. It reads and plays alot like a dozen other OSR games, with dull, generic fantasy trope classes and uninspired Tolkien retread races. I hate OSR with a passion, but that's just my own...

D&D 5E What Races (classes) do you allow or disallow in your campaign?

Oh I'm not angry, I apologize for giving that impression. I'm just pointing out the pettiness of a certain subset of grogs who constantly crap on everyone who has the audacity to enjoy something different from them.

D&D 5E What Races (classes) do you allow or disallow in your campaign?

"And on this week's episode of "Grognards Ruin Everything" we're discussing D&D classes and races". Seriously, why is every thread started by a Grog about crapping all over other people's fun? Is the idea that someone else out there might be having fun doing things differently than you really so...

D&D 5E What Races (classes) do you allow or disallow in your campaign?

In my campaign I allow every race except for the Yuan-Ti Pureblood, but that's because the party is battling against the Yuan-Ti in my current storyline. Otherwise I'd allow them. The only class/subclass I ban is the Lore Master Wizard, because it's hideously broken. Otherwise, I allow...

D&D 5E What Races (classes) do you allow or disallow in your campaign?

In response to the original post, how exactly are Dragonborn a munchkin's wet dream?? They are universally thought to be mechanically the worst race in the game by a wide margin.

    Dwarven Sayings

"By Grabthar's hammer, by the sons of Warvan, you shall be AVENGED!" It's from Galaxy Quest, but I think it fits Dwarves pretty well actually.

D&D 5E Short rest house rule

Sounds interesting but I'm a bit confused regarding the implementation of this system. Does this mean that Warlocks get 4 spell slots instead of 2, and Monks get double the ki points? With the understanding that they need to take a long rest to replenish?
