My experience as a player is that sleep is a very powerful spell in practice (especially compared to other 1st level spells). It can be cast at higher level spell slots and it affects current hit points not starting hit points, so it has utility at the start and near the end of a combat.

The spell is powerful (especially at low levels) because there is no save. So I dont get that it could be referred to as a 'save or die' like effect. It is a very powerful spell used a lot by my party - almost to the point of being annoying. I wish it did conform to the save mechanism!

Yeah not a great metaphor! But I like both games. I liked 4e when it was fresh and still reckon some of its elements are of value. There are some 4e elements hidden and buried in 5e. If one was to try recycling 4e elements I would think starting here would be a good option.

One other option is create a raft of houserules for 5e/ or lobby WOTC to produce a module that pushes further into 4e territory in 5e. For the reasons noted up thread, it may be the most realistic option. As much as I like 5e, there is a lot of 4e bathwater around that may have value to some.

I voted for Greyhawk because it was the first world I played D&D in and I think it would fit easily with 5e. I guess it would be good to see Nentir Vale fully realised - but that is realistically not going to happen. But really, it would be cool to see anything other than FR.

I am reading the witcher series Andrzej Sapkowski and they feel very D&D to me. They are pulpy but in a good way. Glen Cook's Black Company series are not the best written books but feel a bit like D&D as well.
