That's true, but not every party has a cleric (or paladin of high enough level), and turning is not guaranteed to work either. The alternate humanoid skeletons might open a serious can of whoop-ass against a 1st level cleric-less party.

Having seen many abuses with the alternate method, I rule it this way as well. Otherwise, the tendency is for every new character to come in as a crafter with up to 2x the gear.

You're definitely not alone in that regard. I read them because there was a certain cool-ness about having novels available based somewhat on D&D. However, I never really enjoyed them that much.

For a campaign setting, I avoid anything "over-developed" and to me Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms are both examples of it. Those settings have too many novels written. If I even attempted to play, I'd have players that are more knowledgeable than the DM, and they would likely throw a fit...
