[Feb] What are you reading now?

??? I take it that my reading list for February doesn't agree with you. To be honest, I don't understand your comment, or more precisely, why you would have to censor yourself.

[Feb] What are you reading now?

I'm finally getting around to reading the Narnia series. I can run through roughly a book every 1-2 days so it shouldn't take long. I'm also reading Darwin's Origin of the Species The World Atlas of Wine, 5th edition A Child Called It The Treason of Isengard (History of Middle Earth book 7) And...

Is the Dragon Archive CD-ROM any good?

It's the best RPG purchase I've ever made. And the most economical.

    The Belgariad-Saga

I enjoyed the Belgariad Saga even though there were some plot holes you could drive a truck through. I've read the Mallorean, Elenium and Tamuli and each series I liked less and less until I just couldn't take it anymore. The reason is that in the 3 other series he's essentially telling the...

    [OT] I hate car dealerships...

When I bought my Saturn, there was absolutely no haggling or price matching involved. I picked out a car, got quoted a price ($12,250) said I wanted payments under $400 and paid $381 a month. They never came back to me and said, "Well, how about $415?" Did I pay a bit more than if I had haggled...

    [OT] I hate car dealerships...

I'm don't really have any advice for you but I do understand your frustration. The only thing I can say is buy a Saturn. They are the only dealer that has ever treated me with respect, listened to what I was willing to spend and stayed within it, and didn't treat me as a schmoe to be taken...

[BoVD Question] Errata? Looking for help on Disciple of Asmodeus

You can ask on Monte's Board, but I would assume that if the character has no spellcasting classes, then he does not gain this benefit. Alternately you can just have the character pick a class and stay with it.

Have you ever had a chance to meet a celebrity?

The people I've met aren't typical celebreties in the tradition sense, but I've met at least 4 Nobel prize winners in physics, including Steve Chu (laser trapping of atoms) who actually visited my lab and Doug Osheroff (superfluid helium 3). Each year my physics department tries to get the...

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix June 21st

I think this is a serious problem with many modern popular writers. They get big enough and rich enough that editors have trouble cutting out the chaff from their books. Just look at Clive Cussler. His early Dirk Pitt books clocked in at roughly 300-400 pages, while his later books are roughly...

    Classics of literature?

I found his short fiction to be possibly the best I've ever read. There was a time when I kept trying to write short stories in his style. If you do want to pick up his work, I suggest the collection titled "Where I'm Calling From." Ray Bradbury has been mentioned before but I will second his...

Sci-Fi books that got you to go 'wow'

Recent future or past makes it a bit limiting, but four that come to mind are: Moonseed by Steven Baxter 2001 by Arthur Clarke Rendevous With Rama by Arthur Clark and Neuromancer by William Gibson.

    Elrond in the LotR movie...

EEK! This is definitely a somewhat wrong statement. Both Earendil and Elwing are considered Half-elves. Earendil is the son of Tour (Human) and Idril (Noldor Elf). Elwing is half-elf also and counted among the elves. Actually, she is the daughter of Dior and Nimloth. Dior was the son of Beren...

LotR Books: What is Tom Bombadil?

The one thing Tolkien HAS said explicitly is that Tom Bombadil is NOT Eru/Iluvatar. Read the link in my last post in this thread.

LotR Books: What is Tom Bombadil?

Well, I won't claim to be the absolute authority on Tolkien or Tom Bombadil, but it is known from Tolkien's letters that he did not quite know who or would not say who Tom Bombadil is. At the time of writing FoTR he definitely put quite a few curious and possibly wrong statements about Tom, some...

LotR Books: What is Tom Bombadil?

Tom Bombadil existed for at least 3 years or more before LoTR was even started. The poem "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" is a rewrite of a poem originally published in The Oxford in 1934. Old Man Willow is also a concept from this time and Tom himself gets caught in the crack. (See The Return...
