Played Basic D&D for the first time in over 20 years last night...

3.x gave me what I thought I wanted. But, what it really gave me was agonizing over how best to optimize a character, while spending less time thinking about how my character interacts with the world. Our group devotes a whole session or two sometimes to character building, leveling up...

    Campaign Settings you like

    1. Ravenloft/Masque of the Red Death - if given the opportunity to be a player in any campaign setting of my choice or be the DM for a Ravenloft campaign, I'll pick being a Ravenloft DM every day of the week and twice on Sunday (even if I don't have the time to be a DM - I enjoy RL that much...

14 Year old You vs The Today You

Ahh, yes, the mid 80's.... and I was half the man I am now. Seriously, 140 lbs then, and now... oh dear! When I was 14, my dungeons contained 50 deep pits filled halfway with green slime. Thankfully, I've changed a lot since then... the pits are now 100' deep and filled 1/2 of the way with...

    Derogatory Term for Halflings

Some guys I game with used this originally for an elf (they were playing dwarves and half-orcs) but I suppose it could work just as well for a halfling. "Shut up... lunch!"

Best Five RPG Books You Own

    1. Rules Cyclopedia (Basic D&D) - complete role-playing in a single book. The title that qualifies for "if I was stuck on a desert island and could only have 1 RPG book, this would be it." Although I prefer Moldvay B/X version of the rulebooks for sentimental reasons, this is by far the best...

What Do Your Kids Think of D&D, and How Do You Handle It?

My daughter likes taking the minis, turning them all around and checking them out with a fine tooth comb, and then insists on putting them someplace other than where Dad had them. She also thinks it's funny to pat the palm of her hand down on spear tips or anything else pointy. And she happily...

What adventure module defines D&D to you?

On the advice of both my attorney and public relations expert, I refuse to answer that question!?!?!?! I would however have to pick as most iconic: B2 Keep on the Borderlands S1 Tomb of Horrors I6 Ravenloft T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil

Best weight paper for double-sided printing?

Another vote for 24 lb paper. Also, I would recommend getting some heavy cardstock and using that to print the covers.

    Identifying "old school" adventure modules

I'd have to add to the list B2-Keep on the Borderlands. How many old-time gamers haven't cleared out those caverns (multiple times)? And no matter how many times I play it, "bree-yark" (or however it's spelled) still means "I surrender".

So, you're going to the nuthouse today...what book are you taking?

If I could only take one RPG book, it would be the D&D Rules Cyclopedia If I could take a second book, it would be the 3rd Ed Masque of the Red Death book

Pathfinder 1E [Pathfinder] Well done, Paizo! (Pathfinder RPG)

How does multi-classing work? Same as 3.5? Different (dare I hope for 'old school')?

Are you attending Gen Con 2009?

Sadly, no, and I suspect my Gen Con days are probably over for awhile (at least until my kids are all old enough to go). Also, being down to one income doesn't help any.

Cast page was awesome! Perfect tie-in.

When someone plays something you don't like

Announce the campaign and have a set of rules for PC generation. Have allowable races/classes/feats, limits on multiclassing, starting equipment, and so on. Then, I add the caveat that if you want to play something that's not on the list, write up a bit about the character concept and present...

"?" about "The D&D Rules Cyclopedia"

Here's another vote for the "if I could only have 1 book on a desert island" view. I prefer the B/X presentation of the rules (and don't like campaigns going much higher than 14th level anyways), but as a single-book resource, there is nothing better. The rules are light enough to not bog down...

I just did something I never though I would do

On the subject of cancelled pre-orders, I had originally ordered two PHB's from Barnes & Noble (I had a $25 gift card to cover the cost of 1, and was paying for a second). Well, money got tight so I had to cut back to just getting one. Well, I brought it over to my older nephew to review (he's...

Cats in the 4E slipcase! (NOW WITH BRIBES!)

If someone sends me a slipcase, I'll happily photo cats & kittens in it and post. With 5 kittens & 17 cats, I think I can cover the picture angle for awhile.

Eulogize your favorite slaughtered sacred cow.

Goodbye Dungeons & Dragons. They tried to tell me it was new and improved, and retained all the flavor of the classic, just like New Coke. Alas, it's just new and tastes funny.

    Reaper Minis?

I sincerely hope Reaper never goes under - they are producing the best minis on the market right now. I definitely vote for using metal miniatures if at all possible. I've given up on the plastic ones at all.
