I'll also endorse Noble Knight Games.

New players only at level 1?

I'd recommend fighter or barbarian if the player doesn't have a burning desire to start out as a spellcaster. The combat rules are the most used of the game, and it's a good first step (I did this with my nephew with ranger and he's rocking). If a spellcaster, I'd want them to play a character...

Paladins and the Mentally Instable People that Play Them

I like playing paladins. I'm not crazy. Neither am I. Nor I.

    D&D, Miniatures, and you.

Did the DDM thing for a bit for NPC's/monsters, but it just got too dang expensive. So I switched to counters from Fiery Dragon. Use painted metal minis for PC's, but keep a few plasticrack around for newbies and what not, and also for certain NPCs.

Do only DMs like rules lite systems?

I'd prefer something in the realm of rules medium-light. I like a bit more structure to resolve issues, but dislike the complexity of a rules-heavy system. As a player, I don't want to have to pour over 20 different books of feats and options to design a PC - I'd just like to take 10-15...

    I Have A Problem With 3E

Yes, I've had problems with power gamers finding all the most tripped out combinations and playing them with no thought to the role-playing behind it in the past. And, when I send threats that expose the weaknesses of the power-gamed characters, I get accused of being out to get the PC's (even...

    I Have A Problem With 3E

Multi-classing The one thing I've set on multi-classing is to keep it interesting, yet limit it. Basically, I divide the classes into several "groups" and PC's can only take one class per group. Here's my current breakdown (with the classes I will allow - classes that appear twice lock out...

Need help finding the right PC mini

OK everyone, I'm trying to find just the right PC mini for a character of mine, and would like help from those who have more knowledge of minis (especially older ones) than I. Im trying to find a mini for a ranger/swashbuckler. I'm looking for him to have either chain or leather armor, two...

    D&D 4E 4E - more rules or less?

Streamline the skills (fewer skills that cover more - ie 'stealth' instead of move silently & hide). Eliminate the feats, and make a lot of combat maneuvers simple (ie, a simple opposed attack roll). Lose the skill synergy, and make it less of a numbers crunch thing. Keep the basic d20 mechanic.

    Wizard or Sorc for necromancer?

I would echo using dread necromancer as a first choice. If that's not an option, I would ask yourself how your character came to be interested in dead things, and choose your class accordingly. If he was perhaps traumatized as a youth (lost in a crypt or what not) and developed a fascination...

    Popular Campaign Settings

Ravenloft! Infinitely flexible (need a new themed land? you find an island in the mists). Can be very dark if you want it to be, or you can make it silly if you desire (ie, Abbot & costello meet Frankenstein or Addams Family). Eric

Well, I voted for one, but I'd really like to vote 'all of the above'!

    Anti dwarf traps

Make the pit 100 feet deep, half full of green slime. Or grey ooze. Or metal-eating acid. Or, dwarven spirits (talk about drowning in one's drink...). Or, even worse, Elven wine! Make it with a concealed cover, then put an illusion of the floor over it (have to disbelieve the illusion...

    Greyhawk Codex website?

Hey all, A few years ago I found a lovely site called the Greyhawk Codex (www.greyhawk-codex.com), which had some interesting articles, graphics, and what not. Well, yesterday I went looking for it again and all I could find was a dead link, and an internet archive that didn't have any of the...

    roleplaying people are satanists ;)

Chick has about as much of a clue about what Catholicism teaches as he has about what goes on during D&D games. Maybe there's a connection there between what he's ignorant about, and what he calls Satanic. Of course, ignorance is... well... just ignorance.

If you were to play a version of pre-3.0 D&D, which would it be?

I voted Moldavy/Cook. I'm on a serious nostalgia kick right now. I agree not much difference between Moldavy/Cook and RC to warrant a different category. I am teaching my nephew how to play 3.5, and for kicks I pulled out my Moldavy B/E books and character sheets. My nephew was astonished...

    Coolest Dice

My vote is for the clear Borealis dice from Chessex (regular, aquaurple, or confetti).

    What are your favorite traps?

I'll recommend... 60' deep pit, filled halfway with green slime. The pit is covered with anti-magic runes so no feather fall or fly spells work. The pit trap is a secret door, covered by the illusion of the floor. The pit is in a hallway, with a door on each end. If both doors are closed...
