D&D 5E How lawyery do you get with Zone of Truth?

Always? Even if the NPC might have been willing to share the truth but feels offended or threatened that the PC chose to go this route? Or maybe the NPC realizes the truth has value, and wants to profit... Always is rather extreme, don't you think?

Third Party Character Creation iOS App Removed

This. So much this. The Character Generation Process has always been protected (see the 3.5 SRD). The sites/apps that are being asked to stop reproduce (often verbatim) the class features, feat details, racial traits, etc... of content that is not in the basic rules or the online rules.

D&D 5E How lawyery do you get with Zone of Truth?

This is a really neat spell. The description specifically states that the subject(s) can avoid answering questions if they so choose and can be evasive. It also says that they are aware of the spell, but not that the subject knows that the caster knows whether or not they have succeeded on...

    D&D 5E Surprise and initiative

You are correct. But a turn spent doing nothing IS a turn, whether you spend the turn intentionally doing nothing, or you spend the turn doing nothing because you were surprised. The Assassin may very well still be hidden, and still gain advantage because of that, or by spending Inspiration, or...

    D&D 5E Big Cities

Here's how I approach big cities, and preparing them to interact with the PCs; 1) as iserith said, describe the city as succinctly as possible. What is its character? What is it known for? What is it really like? What are the buildings made of (stone, brick, adobe, clay tile roofs, etc...)? 2)...

    D&D 5E Strength bows?

Just give them the Finesse Quality. It already covers the ability to use STR or DEX for attack/damage. No need to invent a new quality.

    D&D 5E Strength bows?

The dart has both the thrown and the finesse qualities but is a ranged weapon (not a melee weapon). STR may be used for to hit and damage, Archery Style applies, as does Sharpshooter. By RAW, it may be used to attack adjacent enemies without incurring Disadvantage, since it does not have the...

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

You are correct on the disadvantage only applying to ammunition weapons. Meaning that, RAW, you could make a melee attack with dart (which is a ranged weapon)and use Archery Style to get a +2 to the attack, apply Sharpshooter to get the -5/+10. Because that makes more sense than allowing...

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

True that, but would lose your proficiency bonus., since a ranged weapon used to make a melee attack., is an improvised weapon.

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

Now, don't you go bringing sense into this.... ;)

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

Because the rules specifically reference the lists "choose a spell from any class list", etc... The weapons section doesn't do that, it specifically states how each type is defined. It then has a list, which details the attributes and abilities of each weapon. That information is not presented...

D&D 5E Salior Variant: Bad Reputation

It says "most people will not report you..." It also does not say anything about the authorities being afraid of you. If the PC is abusing it, they should suffer the consequences. A smart player will use this to get away with chasing a bad guy through a China shop without having to pay for the...

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

First and foremost: I hope everyone in this thread is having fun - I'm not trying to criticize or demean anyone. The goal of a discussion or argument (not a fight :)) is clarity - that's all. Please have fun, I am. No authority, just the definition of definition. The line I quoted from the PHB...

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

I just quoted you a definition; the table is an illustration. Tools are not animals and are not subject to unary classification. What is the difference between a knife and a dagger? a dagger and a short sword? a short sword and a long sword? Between a knife intended to be used in a kitchen (a...

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

I don't think it would break the game to consider a thrown weapon a ranged weapon when making a ranged attack. The last sentence of the thrown descriptor still applies. The only oddball situation this creates would be a STR based character with the Sharpshooter feat deciding to throw his...

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

<shrugs> I hadn't seen that. Seems like a silly distinction to make. Why gimp thrown weapons that can also be used in melee?

D&D 5E Chucking daggers: how do we throw two?

As to whether or not Sharpshooter applies to a weapon with the throw property, I would argue that it should. The only definition of melee weapons and ranged weapons is this: PHB p. 146 Therefore, a dagger is either, depending on how it is used, not where it is listed on the equipment table. IMHO.

    D&D 5E Great Weapon Master

For those that feel the need to include the maximum damage out put possible, because it supposedly relevant, I would like to pose this counter argument: Taking GWF, GWM, and Polearm Master are wasted style and feat choices because it is possible to take 7 attacks in one round and still do zero...

    D&D 5E Humans!?

I stopped reading here. Own it; love it; never played it/ran it; borrowed from it often, though.... You, sir, win the internet :)

    D&D 5E Great Weapon Master

Regardless of how one experiences the game, it makes no sense to pass judgement on a mechanic based on how it "feels". Especially when you have access to actual data. Even more so when (in this case) the data doesn't even have to address the opportunity cost of not taking any of the other 20 or...
