In 3.0 ... definately YES. Check out the "Unarmed Attacks" section at PH.140 to see that natural attacks are part of a bigger whole, called unarmed attacks. In 3.5 ... I can't find anything that's clear about the natural/unarmed thing.

But even with 3.5 Core and no discussable items, your 17th lvl druid could have a reasonable AC in animal shape (though shapechange would be much better ;)): Dire Tiger shape ... a pretty decent "natural" fighting shape +6 Natural Armor +2 Dexterity -1 Size +7 from Wild Darkwood Breastplate +2...

Something else to thing about is, that for the creatures that seem disadvantaged in a grapple ... they can use their improved grab ability at -20 ... they won't succeed often, but it's free with every melee attack that hits, so why just don't try it every time.

In our campaign my dire bear wears bracers, an amulet, a ring, eyes of the eagle, a belt and a vest (and a wild darkleaf fullplate).

That he has 7 hd doesn't matter for wildshape, it's druid levels that count. Nice 5 HD animals are: - dire ape ... large + reach - lion ... large + pounce + rake + improved grab - dire hawk ... good for scouting

I took the "education" feat ... were playing in the FR setting. But the maker of the prc said on sean's boards (http://pub17.ezboard.com/bseankreynoldsboards) that he assumed at the time that knowledge (nature) was a class skill for clerics. He adviced to drop the prereq to 4 ranks or change it...

The DM in our City of the Spider Queen is very wary of my druid / animal lord (bears), and his companion, a brown bear, who both grapple an extreme amount of nice medium sized drow :D At the moment, they're the best frontline fighters, but then ... we have no fighters, clerics or barbarians in...

The 'Wild Shape Amulet' from 'Magic of Faerun' allows you to wildshape as a druid of 4 lvls higher, so 4 more HD is also an option. ... it's 40.000 gp.

We mostly just see what people can use and sell the rest, though keeping back some loot or looting while the others are away / not looking does happen :)

Yes it would work, just like animal growth works on wildshaped druids.
