I would give votes to Savage Worlds, HERO, and FATE for sure. Probably give a look at Burning Wheel as well though it might be a bit of work. For naval tactical games, you can't go wrong with Uncharted Seas. It is Manowar for the new generation.

Intriguing for sure. I got the quick start rules for Free RPG Day two years ago and was really impressed by the sense of wonder they inspired. I keep meaning to pick up the actual rulebook but haven't gotten around to it yet.

As someone who is a big HERO fan, I love M&M because it allows me to do almost everything I love about HERO, but also allows me to find players actually willing to play the game. As a very customizable game with a medium level of crunch, it fills a nice niche for me in between HERO and Savage...

For now and the foreseeable future, just humans are playable.

Savage Worlds or HERO would be my top choices depending on how granular you want it.

Everyone I know that has/plays Descent was pretty much said they won't play vanilla Descent anymore. Road to Legend makes a decent game much much better.

As someone who found the blades "meh" and never really cared for the PS3 interface, I enjoy the NXE. It works for me and feels intuative.

The buildings are actually very vital to gameplay. A lot of them have special abilites if you have units near them, such as giving all your units more movement or longer range. They are also the quickest way for your monsters to "charge up" their power dice which enable them to do special moves...

The monster figures are large. If you're familiar with Warmachine/Hordes they are about as large as a light 'jack/beast. Or perhaps as big as a Large DDM figure. The units are pretty small, and seem to fit in scale well. The rules are fairly simple, but all the models have special ability...

They vary a good bit. But that's going to happen when you have that many people writing. I will say I think they are on average the best shared world novels I've read by far. I'd heartily recommend the Gotrek and Felix Omnibus editions, the Vampire Genevieve Omnibus, and the Blackhearts Omnibus...
