    D&D 4E 4e: the new paradigm

    1) Yes- you could weaken casters dramatically instead of bringing mundane classes up a few notches and casters down a few. The powers that make pre-4e casters so much better are (theoretically) not at-will. So you either take away everyone's resources or you give everyone resources. Do you think...

D&D 4E 4e: You Are Dead to Me

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid we all lose the thread.

    Armor Class (Reverse Engineering)

Forgive me if it was said already, but could the fighter's higher AC than expected have to do with class abilities? I'm pretty sure R&C said that fighters would get dex bonuses to AC in heavy armor.

If you could buy advance copies of the core books now, how much would you pay?

Too bad there was no "human sacrifice" option =\

    Reframing the 15 min day

My games have run into the accidental 15-minute day more often than the planned version. At low levels it's especially common. Sometimes the PCs get really hurt in 1 or 2 fights and they have to rest and recharge. I could push them further, but if they've used all their heals and some are still...

    Fighters -must- wear heavy armor

Playing a barbarian when the rules for one come out is not biologically impossible.

    Fighters -must- wear heavy armor

Why wouldn't dex help AC? All Mearls told us was that fighters were assumed to have heavy armor. See my earlier post for why this is not new. Dex can do what it has always done and still not be enough to make up for no armor. The "specialist archer" is probably the ranger, btw.

    Factoring items into balance flawed?

When the writers make a monster, they have to give it an AC and a hit bonus. That means they have to pick numbers that they expect for PCs of that monsters level. Example: Let's say they want to make sure the monster has a 50% chance to strike a fighter. If they assume zero magic, the fighter...

    Fighters -must- wear heavy armor

Right, you could easily go armorless and ditch the full plate + heavy shield combo by having a dex of 30. The full plate + shield combo was affordable by 3rd level, by the way. I'm not sure what it takes to get a dex of 30. More than 3rd level though. A high-level 3e fighter with dex 16...

What was so bad about DMing 3x?

The exception-based monster design may be the key to more variety. If there is no worry that PC-monster symmetry must exist, each monster type is free to have different abilities. Constraining things for balance means that monsters can't break as many rules. That seems to be out the window...

    D&D 4E 4e Tiers & Classes - a different take

Skills are still in the game. Subterfuge and so on is covered by the skill system and good old role-playing. Having ranks in a skill and maybe a few feats or powers for special applications is enough. Combat abilities are relevant to the game because tactical combat has always been a core...

    D&D 4E 4e Tiers & Classes - a different take

Not to be mean, but how does writing this sort of a system not lead to a 1,000 page PH released in 2015? I'll take a functional, combat-focused system this year instead. I think if we actually tried to come up with the rules to cover diverse social and crafting situations, we would realize that...

Countdown to the Realms: Magic in the Forgotten Realms

I'm not sure if it struck anyone else this way, but the spellscar flavor reminds me of Incarnum.
