    D&D 5E Those poor farmers!

Because, like I stated in my last post, he is an NPC who's fortunes rise and fall based on the DM's whim. The rules in the DMG are a guideline for PCs to run a side business in addition to adventuring. Those rules can be extrapolated for a PC to become a merchant prince, but I don't think any...

    D&D 5E Those poor farmers!

A merchant prince doesn't follow the rules in the DMG. Those rules are guidelines for an adventuring player to own a business on the side. Your farmers, tavernkeeps, merchant princes, etc fortunes rise and fall at the will of the DM. If you wanted to get a bit deeper into the players becoming...

D&D 5E Ideas for an evil force trapped in rock

From what I remember the evil genie is trapped inside a ruby. So it popped into mind when I read the OPs thoughts about an evil force trapped in a stone.

D&D 5E Why you shouldn't allow optional rules.

GMforPowergamers one thing to consider with 5e as a whole is that every class has fewer things to do in combat. The martial classes are just hit a little harder than the caster classes. While 5e does backpedal in the amount of options that most classes have in every combat from to a more pre...

    D&D 5E Why Should I Allow Feats

I just got my DMG and haven't had a chance to read it, but how do hordes of monsters break the encounter guidelines? As long as you stay within budget the numbers don't matter do they? I'm honestly curious, because numbers and terrain are often the best ways to deal with powerful characters...

D&D 5E Why you shouldn't allow optional rules.

There are so few thematically appropriate options and feats that certain combinations stand out. Unfortunately some of those combinations result in characters that are more powerful than others. Hence what Derren said: "The point is that apparently people can become a "min-maxer" by...

    D&D 5E Why Should I Allow Feats

Well, if these combinations are the "obvious thing to do that everyone has them" make it so that everyone has them. Have some orc berserkers with the GW Master and GW fighting attack the players with a shaman or two to drop faerie fire for advantage. Throw in some archers with the sharpshooter...

    D&D 5E Why should I allow Multiclassing ?

For me, it's a campaign by campaign decision. I did have a thought for those that think that multi-classing breaks the verisimilitude of the game though. First, I understand where you are coming from. How did Joe fighter suddenly become a wizard while exploring the forest of dread? But the...

    D&D 5E Why should I allow Multiclassing ?

In any edition prior to 5th I would be right there with you. I just wanted to point it out since it's explicitly called out as optional in the PHB. I'm away from my book right now, but I believe those two sections even have language about checking with the DM to make sure that they are...

    D&D 5E Why should I allow Multiclassing ?

While I agree with your basic notion that it's good to let your players know what rules you are using for a game I do have to point out that the multiclass rules are optional in the PHB and not a default rule. So not using them would not be a house rule. It's the same with feats.

D&D 5E Monster Tactics: How Ruthless a DM are you?

I'd have the dragon fight smartly, but in it's arrogance would land to engage. Then if things went bad it would retreat and begin plotting a terrible revenge. The PCs get their victory and earn a long time enemy. =)

    D&D 5E Rogues & damage...

Most definitely, but the current mechanics are balanced on them not being the top. Would you remove other features from the rogue to help balance things out? Like the extra skills or expertise or something else or would you just up their damage to make them the top? It's your game if you do...

D&D 5E Monster Tactics: How Ruthless a DM are you?

Don't forget to include personality too. Dragons are supposed to be haughty and arrogant. If your dragon's buddy's ever found out about his tactics he would be the laughing stock of all of the dragon socials. The big cowardly dragon who was afraid to fight the PCs. :D

    D&D 5E Rogues & damage...

In that environment it works. There really isn't anything other than combat in MMOs. In a tabletop game the rogue has so many other niches to fill that they're not set up (besides 4e) to be a primary damage dealer.

D&D 5E On the healing options in the 5e DMG

Most of the time, yes. But you could be at 0 outside of combat, roll a 20 to spend a surge, then spend 3 more to be at full. It's a bit pedantic, but I think the point is pretty much the same either way. :p

D&D 5E On the healing options in the 5e DMG

They're only linked if you want them to. Seperate the resting (HD, healing, etc) times from the ability recover times. WAG: 1 hour: Recover short rest (Battle master, etc). 8 Hours: healing short rest, spend HD. 8 hours: recovery long rest (sorcerer, etc). 24 hours: healing long rest.

D&D 5E On the healing options in the 5e DMG

In 4E you could go from 0 to full by spending 4 surges. And anyone could do that with only 5 min of rest. I can see that as being too much for some. But I've always seen 4Es HP system as a little more cinematic. 0 HP didn't necessarily mean dying, it could just be unconscious. The Death...

D&D 5E Just a thought about prestige classes.

Why do prestige classes need to have anything to do with the combat tier. We have feats for that. A feat that let's you cast touch spells through a weapon attack covers blade singer, arcane archer, and more. A while back I proposed a feat that combined the wizards necromancy feature with the...
