    Knowledge Arcana Issue 9!

I believe that's the wolf in sheep's clothing. Flumphs are, and I know it's hard to believe, even dumber than that. But even they are no flail snail.

No spell resistance vs. Orb spells? Why?

Which is exactly why it should be defeated by AMF and spell resistance, right? Simple, easy, magical.

D&D is its own Genre of Fantasy?

My guess is he's talking about this: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=protagonist Apparently "protagonist" once meant the most important character but has come to mean the main characters more generally, though there's some fighting about it. This is a pretty big claim. I mean, it...

D&D is its own Genre of Fantasy?

Right, so that's the issue exactly: you're using some nonstandard meaning of "D&D Fantasy." The idea that fantasy as a bookstore genre has changed in the wake of D&D is not new. It's been much discussed on internet boards over the years. It's also an idea that I think has a lot of strength to...

D&D is its own Genre of Fantasy?

I'm not following you on this. There are a bunch of successful and well-known novels which clearly draw on D&D tropes like races, classes, diverse parties going on quests and the like. Are you excluding them from "conventional narrative" for some reason?

D&D is its own Genre of Fantasy?

Ron Edwards talks a bit about D&D as a genre of Fantasy in his articles on the history of D&D http://www.indie-rpgs.com/articles/20/, Fantasy Heartbreakers http://www.indie-rpgs.com/articles/9/, and More Fantasy Heartbreakers http://www.indie-rpgs.com/articles/10/. (Sorry, I can't figure out how...

D&D is its own Genre of Fantasy?

Those things are examples of stories written in the genre that D&D built. The argument goes that D&D fantasy inspired lots of later stories that basically follow its lines. There's got to be a good essay on this online somewhere. I should look around a bit.

Cheap Monte Cook's AU and IH pdfs

Isn't there a new edition coming out since the IP was sold? Or was that a rumor (that I'm now cruelly perpetuating)?

Help with Feats for a Cleric

Scribe Scroll. It's even better for Cleric spells than for Wizard spells, because you have the status-removers on your list, won't want to prep them every day, and when you need 'em, you really need 'em. Plus, a pile of Protection From Evil scrolls is probably the best anti-domination...

    Cleave on an AoO?

The problem isn't really with Cleave, it's with AoO. They give you an extra action, and at base that doesn't make a ton of sense. You might quite reasonably ask "why does one guy dropping his guard mean that another gets whacked?" But step back. Why does that guy dropping his guard mean that he...

Temple of the Frog d20 from WotC?

I was already sold on Pbartender's idea of Iron Heroes vs. classic modules. This may be a good place to test it out. Maybe I'll get around to putting it together as a one-shot sort of thing, for use at a gameday or something. (Does ENWorld ever do games days in Wisconsin? There seem to be a lot...

    Fishers find CR10 Squid!

Yup: expanding water and less ice that's currently on land. It is true that water is denser than ice, but that doesn't mean that sea level hasn't (or won't continue) to rise. I won't talk about Global Warming, since in the US at least, that has become a political issue (I understand that...

    Taking 20 Too Often

We just had this argument on RPGnet, actually. I'll report my thoughts: ------------ Taking 20 works less well for trapfinding than for searching for treasure, secret doors, and such, IMO. I've been playing through the Age of Worms adventure path, and some of the dungeons we've done have been...

    Drinking and gaming?

Someone has some beer pretty much every time I hang out with people, including gaming. But no one gets drunk while gaming. I'm frankly amazed that so many people have friends who are unable to have a few beers in the course of a few hours, but instead slam so many that they get hammered at the...

Hey, people in prison need D&D too!

I generally think it's okay for people of all stripes to play D&D, but I can see authority figures being bothered by the intragroup authority the DM weilds. I mean, out in the world it's not a big deal that Jim is in charge of the game. But if you were in the military, a prison, or other...

    Dividing XP among characters

Presicely, I've seen a system of voting on small awards for categories like "most bravery", "best roleplaying", and "best idea" at the end of every session, and seen them work very well. However, this is clearly a result of the type of groups they were in. These awards served as a sort of "group...
