Why DO Other Games Sell Less?

I'm not sure that D&D was "first". When I first got online one group of D&D-haters said that it was, and that was the only reason it was popular, instead of their favorite game. Another group of haters said it was not, because it was important to them that people who pretended to be elves in the...

    Ranger - likes and dislikes?

A ranger is a ninja who lives in the woods. ... Just give fighters and thieves Survival, eliminate the Track feat, and you've filled the niche without a separate base class.

Best Class for a new player

In 2e and earlier it was fighter, no questions asked. That's no longer true. Fighters now have lots of situational modifiers and tactical decisions to make, in light of their many feats. They need to pick the right feats, then use them in combat. When you don't know what type of die to roll for...

What color is the iconic dragon?

A green dragon that breathes fire. In D&D, the only evil dragon to breathe fire is the red, so they're the one I'd use. For low level parties, I'd go white since they can actually fight it. But in terms of general dragon art and myth, I think green scales, fiery breath of doom. -C.

    D&D needs improvement

Man, it's hard to resist necroing that thread. FWIW, I find the anti-Death Spiral realism argument pretty compelling based on the FBI and other data provided. For those that are interested, there are relevant studdies quoted, but it's pretty late in the thread. Google might be a good resource. -C.

    D&D needs improvement

I disagree. It would have been a decent troll about 25 years ago. Now it's just old hat. We've heard all these complaints before. It hardly seems worth countering them again. -C.

Do you use or not use specific rules because of fears of munchkinism?

Do I worry that someone will find a way to exploit a loophole in an otherwise good rule and therefore forbid all uses of that rule? No. Do I believe it's important for WotC to find and root out such loopholes for tournament play? Yes. Players often take abilities which are powerful. Sometimes...

    D&D-influenced Fantasy Novels

I don't mean that specific term, but rather the idea of fungible gold coins used as money and carried and used by characters all the time. I expect some folks use the term itself, of course, but many more use the idea. My reading is also limited, though Song of Ice and Fire has gold coins--and...

    D&D-influenced Fantasy Novels

Most post-D&D fantasy is influenced by it to some degree or other. I expect that's why so many old school fantasy authors detest the game--it totally infiltrated their genre. My personal test is gold pieces. If a fantasy book features gold pieces I know it's a post-D&D book. Now that I think...

    Advice on balancing an encounter

No plan ever survives contact with the PCs. Unless you're prepared to railroad like Casey Jones (and your players won't mind that) I'd strongly suggest you be ready for them to do all sorts of crazy things. Including try to win at all costs (and either do so or TPK) and totally abandon...

    Buying single DDM online--whaddaya think?

So I ordered from popularcollections.com and CCG Armory this weekend. Popularcollections had a rather high shipping price, though their per mini price was good. They were out of stock for a large number of older minis, though. This only matters if i wait months and months to order singles after...

What d20 author do you buy sight-unseen?

I especially like how they toast evil at the end. I've never heard Monte Cook badmouth anyone else in the industry. So I'm inclined to believe his comments about TSR are relatively generous. But nonetheless: To evil!

    The Vulgar Argot

Wait, why wouldn't your PCs know what hobbit sword meant in the world? It seems like it should be pretty normal IC knowledge if that's what they're called.

Rogues stealing from their own party

Precisely. It's a social contract issue, and I am strongly on the side of teamwork and agreement. The game's balanced for a certain amount of wealth, and you're not to hoard it for your PC. Divvying up treasure can be hard without stealing. It's not okay on an OOC level, so no IC justification...

    Buying single DDM online--whaddaya think?

I play only RPG, not the minis game. For the first several sets I bought 3-4 random boxes of each. Eventually I found I wasn't getting enough good stuff to buy randomly. I took to trading minis I didn't want on maxminis.com, but even good trades took a fair amount of time, and within 3 or 4...

    Buying single DDM online--whaddaya think?

So I've just about decided to skip buying any boxes of Underdark and instead buy the commons and uncommons I want from that set (and older sets) online. It looks like this strategy could save me money and time (plus no trading online to get what I really want) but I'd like to hear opinions from...
