Do you have a balanced party?

Nope. We're typically short arcane spell casters. Old party: Pixie Fighter/Rogue Half-Fiend Elf Rogue Incubus Drow Rogue Current Party: Dwarf Cleric Dwarf Ranger Human Bard Elf Cleric Elf Rogue

Favorite System that Never Caught On

About The Morrow Project: TPM came up in my mind. It has a realativle similar sytem to 1E D&D with stats and d20 to hit. It had some realativly good system for modern combat (being created by ex-military IIRC) dealing with hit location, % chance of death due to hit location, rules for blood...

Does the Rakshasa have a too-high CR?

I don't know if 7 levels of sorcerer would really be considered small. With suitable spells tailored to the situations the party finds the rakshasa in plus the DR and SR should make it fairly buff. It's just one of the flaws of a challenge based XP system as opposed to the old objective XP...

Does the Rakshasa have a too-high CR?

You're forgetting two of its most powerful powers being Detect Thougths (at will) and Change Shape. Placing it in a postion where it isn't able to take advantage of these is would be like putting a flying creature with ranged attacks in a suberanean maze with short passages.

Is this "Fair" - Part II

Again, I voted "other' because if I would consider it fair or not would greatly deal with the expectations of the party. For my campaign, I would consider it fair because they have been well warned that not all encoutners are CR appropriate and there are some things they will need to run from...

d20 needs different rules for NPCs

OK. Everything seems fine, but I think I got us off the track of the thread with my questions. I think what is being discussed here is that so much time was put into a BBEG, only to have it killed in the first round of combat. Therefore, there should be special rules for creating BBEGs, so that...

    Unsatisfactory BBEG Fight?

I'd feel satisfied so long as I felt it was luck. the first time would be great. If it started happening too often, then I'd be a little less satisfied. Even then, it wouldn't really determine the over all feel of the game. The last DM I had essnetially, had made all combats like that due to...

d20 needs different rules for NPCs

Maybe not bad design, but definatly a case of "Darwin". There are lessons to be learned that every NPC and PC past a level where they need to worry about disentigrate should think about. If an NPC has lived past that point then they should have such things instigated and they would extend beyond...

d20 needs different rules for NPCs

As for Mr. Mearls, there was some topic of his posted here I disagreed with, yet thought it interesting that everybody seemed to have great respect for this guy who I had never heard of. So I looked up his website and list of products he had worked on and the only things I saw that I recognised...

d20 needs different rules for NPCs

So far, it seems Mr. Mearls is batting 1000 and everything the man has done, I dislike. I consider #3 the antithesis of everything I try and accomplish in running an most RPGs. Editted to add: Yes, and when my carefully set up encounters are destroyed by a single bad roll, I put it down to...

Is this fair? -- your personal opinion

I still say there is not enough information. For what is given us, it could be a 20th level monk in a 1st level dungeon, or it could be a 1st level monk in a 20th level dungeon. Many assumptions are made and people are argueing on those assumptions. Since different people will come up with...

    What's your screen name from?

Mine is a name that I use for almost all forums and such on the internet because most other names are taken and I own PainandGreed.com which I use for my main email address and personal webpage. The actual name of the domain does not come from me but from a friend of mine. To make a long sad...

Is this fair? -- your personal opinion

You make lots of assumptions I don't think can be taken from the given text. You assume they take 20 in searching. You assume the player of the rogue is competent. You assume the door has no other possible means of being opened. You assume the monk is of a level appropriate for the dungeon and...

    The World Village

The website is from 2001 and the information is probably from before that. I could imagine that more people would own computers these days.

Is this fair? -- your personal opinion

We don't know if the door beyond the McGuffin would only be accessable to the BBEG. In this case, the dungeon has already been cleared and we have no knowledge of where in the dungeon it is (except that it is in a back room in a corner) as far as importance or danger. For that matter, McGuffin's...

Is this fair? -- your personal opinion

Could be that the BBEG is undead and pulling the lever sets off a Fortitude save which he is immune to. I've used traps like that before in dungeons. Something critical or a bottleneck that is in an environment adverse to all but the person who put it there. Water based creatures putting...

Is this fair? -- your personal opinion

Not enough information. Whether this would be fair or not for me would have a lot to do with verisimilitude, the expectations of the players towards the game, and the previous actions of the DM. If the DM has warned them that the game would include danger, perhaps way beyond their ability if...

Why do you homebrew? or Hombrew blues

I homebrew because I like to come up with my own ideas and want to put them into my campaign. I could run a pre-published campaign and try and fit those ideas in, but sometimes, it is very much like fitting a round peg into a square hole. Sometimes, the ideas are significant enough that major...

    Anita Blake Vampire Hunter

Most other people covered it. They have good ideas in a world I like. The trouble is the writing. In the early books, everybody is an ass, has an ego, and does enough macho posturing that I found it hard to read through and broke SOD because there can't be that many disfunctional people with...

How Many New Systems have you bought?

None. ...and to be honest, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if I have ever bought any non-D&D/d20 fantasy based game. I've bought plenty of games and played quite a few, but never bought another fantasy game. The only non-D&D/d20 game stuff I've bought in years has been White Wolf and...
