[D&D Design Discussion] Preserving the "Sweet Spot"

Then how about adding new things in there to advance in. There are other things like reputation, status, and social standing that can be hard to be advanced and can have noticable values and effects, yet aren't always related to XP or level. About the time they slow down in normal advancement...

An Open Letter: 'Missing the Mark: Mike Mearls’s ‘Revised’ Ogre Mage'

Not me. My main complaint is that he came up with entirely new monsters with new mechanics that do different things and then gave them old names to replace old monsters. If he would have just come up with better mechanics for their abilities but left them as the same monsters, I doubt I would care.

[D&D Design Discussion] Preserving the "Sweet Spot"

My plan is to try a different XP chart and go to an exponential climb. Doubleing the Xp needed for each level is a little much. I'm looking at making it 1000 Xp for 2nd level and then x1.6 for each level after that. That means for a bit quicker climb in the first couple of levels but then...

What do you do with the character sheets after a session?

As a player, I'll kick over a copy to the Gm, but i always keep the one I actually use. As a GM, I let the players decide but I require a copy of their character sheet before they are allowed to get/spend XP.

Astronomy questions (edit: questions answered Thanks guys!)

Probably not too hard in the same galaxy. They'd just look to the sky, see the new version of the Milky Way to get an idea of how they were positioned in the galactic disk. look for some other galaxies that should have the same appearance anywhere in this galaxy, and from their orientation...

I'd sign my name to that letter. Good job.

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

    Finally, we are in agreement.

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

My appologies for writing so unclrear but that sould be explained in the rest of the sentence and paragraph. They are not physically prohibited from commiting such acts, but there is always a cost. A paladin can commit evil acts as part of a cover as could a CG thief in their attempt to kill the...

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

Those creature that are born evil, WILL commit evil deeds. It is their nature. Some might hide it more than others, but they will be forced by their nature to commit those acts if its alignment cannot change. I explain that in a few sentences later although I didn't expressly address creature...

Is it wrong for NPCs to block a 'detect evil' check by a PC?

Except that it's a court of "Law", not a court of "Good". I'd say that about a third of the population (plus or minus some due to culture) will end up as detecting evil. Typiclly, good societies will not oppress the evil, as they have a respect for life and other sentient being not just other...

Is The Orc and The Pie a well-designed adventure module?

Other. It's not a module, but rather an encounter. Even if cheap, I expect a module to entertain the players for a session or majority of one at least. Too little to this. Not a good example of a module for others to follow.

    Knights - Likes & Dislikes

Not to mention that it doesn't matter what language anybody speaks. The higher power pretty much is the equivilant of a reversed Mass Charm Monster Spell, but even more powerful IIRC because there is no HD limit. They just need to go ahead and admit that it's a mind affecting supernatural ability.

The fireball spell through the editions

However, I sort of miss designing dungeons to take into account fireballs volume. Walls of force, illusionary walls making the room look smaller, and additional corriders to vent fireballs and lessen their effect in rooms with bad guys. Then building the corridors to encounter the BBEG as narrow...

    The New Design Philosophy?

Right but you want a Ferrari, somebody else wants a SUV, the other guy wants a small economical car, and I want something inbetween all of them. They can produce one model or they can produce several*. Current design philosophy seems to be towards making it one single model without any attention...

    The New Design Philosophy?

Which was my idea for 4E (which is what I thought they should have done for 3E). Have a "Basic" set with the four base classes, simple combat, and rules light for easy access to the game by the young and new to RPGs. Then you have the "Advanced" which is not a separate game but aditional rules...

    The New Design Philosophy?

I don't know if I'd call that a problem. People who want the more monsters can get them and those of us that don't, don't. Besides, no matter what design philosophy they follow, it's not like they aren't going to give you and endless array of monster books anyway. So, not only do I not think...

Is Slave Pits of the Undercity a well-designed adventure module?

A well designed module will not assume the alignment of the party and would be usable for parties of all alignments.

The fireball spell through the editions

I was the RBDM in such cases. I made everything in the AoE save. So not only did the PC save versus damage but also his weapons and armor, back pack, etc. teh saving grace was that if a container saved, so did the things inside of it. So the coins didn't need to save unless the pouch failed...

    OotS #334 is up.

See, I've usually found that there is ussually a critical mass of such characters, after which, it is just stated that anybody messing with other party members will be killed in their sleep. they can do whatever they want to others, but messing with the party's efficiency is not allowed. Thus...

Is Slave Pits of the Undercity a well-designed adventure module?

My issue with it seems to be that there is ongoing action that is not addressed in the module. I could see how the basillisks perhaps wandered in a day or two ago and were walled up and keep breaking out. I'm not sure how often they break out but if the random enounter chart is every turn, and...
