Does Dungeons and Dragons need supported settings?

I'm happy with the current support for settings. I appreciate that those settings become mine as soon as I start generating content from the massive lego box they've provided me with. Yes, that means the books are less of a 'good read' and more functional, but that's cool. There's a whole set of...

Any Other 4e Review Sites Out There?

If it helps, I regularly review 4e stuff (and other systems on occasion) over at my blog (linked in sig). There's a preference for adventures in there. As yet I've not gotten into 3pp much, but that's not to say I won't. If there's a call for it, then who am I to argue? Stop by, let me know...

Merry Xmas all. In other news, I got the new big Warhammer box this morning, squeeeee!

Describing NPC's and Monsters - First Encounter

I'm sure the 3.5 MM had a brief 'this is what you see' para at the start of each entry, no?

What adventure module defines D&D to you?

Tough question. Its akin to asking for the defining Beatles album. You have to take into account the edition changes, as they are very different games. With that in mind. Basic D&D, Rahasia. 1e, Pharoah. 2e (limited knowledge, sorry). 3e, The Banewarrens. 4e, The Temple Between. With these...

    What literature influences your games?

Like many I've come up with my own Appendix N for my blog. I hadn't looked at it for a while until this thread. As a result I've added The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. It's a perfect blend of Warhammer, 7th Sea and Oceans Eleven.

4E Situational Modifiers: Too Many or Not Enough?

Its just right, but only just! I love the fact that the combat section in the PHB is co concise. I love the stripped down mods for range, prone, advantage etc. Awesome. Then there's the powers. Sheesh, that exception based design can act like an anchor around the combat! Warlord+action...

Low ability scores -- more fun?

Just wanted to thank you. Your post has helped me cement something in my mind that has been bothering me for DECADES. Well said mate.

Fantasy RPGs that do things... different?

Just off the top of my head I can think of 20 systems and a lot more settings than that! Seriously, you're going to have to narrow your search terms a bit. I'll still have a stab at answering your question though. Try Warhammer FRP. Any edition, it will all be a change for you.

    Opinions about 4e as a one-shot game?

I've had a fair amount of success running oneshots at varuous Cons. In fact my gaming group has a blog entirely devoted to oneshot gaming of all types. The Smart Party. For a step by step guide try my 4e blog Treehouse: and look for the character booklets I made up. As other posters have said...

Has Anyone Introduced New Gamers to 4E?

Charles, I think we've echoed each other on this point before? You're absolutely spot on. This last year I've introduced 4 brand newbies to roleplaying. I started with Trail of Cthulhu thinking the low buy in and story emphasis would help. It didn't. We lasted three sessions and I could see...

    Favorite 4e Blogs?

My blog has garnered many plaudits (round my house). Its a damn good read, and the author is a handsome devil too. Treehouse: You need it in your life.

Converting 3.5 Eberron adventures to 4E-advice, opinions

I converted Whispers of the Vampires Blade, and talked through the process on my blog. Since then I've been eyeing up the others. There's a lot of potential but in the end I have to say that it takes just as long, or longer, than writing your own from scratch.

    Scale of war synopsis??

I've been busy updating the reviews both on my blog and over at RPGnet. The Temple Between is in the chamber at time of writing.

    Encounter writers block

I'm prepping a couple of one shots for a con that's just round the corner (time-wise) and I've drawn a blank. I usually have no problems at all, and I'm not short on inspiration, I just can't seem to get the ideas coming. So two questions: first, what do you do when you need to get the juices...

Demon Queens Enclave - Session Reports

Still in the Pyramid of Shadows here (took a 3 month diversion over in Forgotten Realms). I think lots of groups started with H1 on release and to be fair it seems like people tend to level every month. I'd say a bunch of groups are coming to the end of Trollhaunt about... now.

    Scale of war synopsis??

I'm the author of that thread, which is also on my blog. Yeah, the updates are probably a little slow, sorry about that. I do tend to do them in batches though, so after any dry patch there's usually a flash flood of posts! Also, bear in mind I'm trying to get actual play of these adventures...

Mearls talks about his inspiration for the 4e classes

That someone was me. I'm really glad Mike came by to contribute. A brave decision in some ways. I think I'll try the same thread here and see who bites.

Where does this idea come from? (Forked Thread: The still "complete" list)

For me its all about utility. I can't play enough to keep up with my purchases. I think I'm a good customer of WotC, I buy everything in print, I have a full sub to DDI and I grab all the minis and tiles I can. Trouble is, I simply don't get to use them all. I run a weekly game, never miss one...
