D&D 5E Ruling on evil sentient weapons

Once, as DM, I managed to convince the player of a LN character to trust her LE intelligent sword more than the rest of the party - since it had her interests at heart more than they seemed to. Just through role-playing. I think the sword was named "Justice of the Sultan" and it planned to...

That'll teach you to trust a yugoloth. I still want to read it.

D&D 5E How to handle a shapechanging Mermaid

Do I need to start singing "the Clean Song" at you people?

D&D 5E How to handle a shapechanging Mermaid

As it so happens, my wife played a "landwalking" mermaid in a 3.5 campaign of mine. She did not wear any magical footgear, and in fact avoided leg covering issues altogether. She wore half-plate armor (made of coral) and a chiton (Greek tunic) long enough to cover her rear when out of the...

    D&D 5E Potent Cantrip replacement

My group's evoker wizard just hit 6th level. And I remember that we all agreed that Potent Cantrip was, shall we say, poorly designed. Has anyone come up with a decent suggestion for a replacement power?

    D&D 5E Banshee is Nasty!

My 5th level party encountered a banshee this week as well. The cleric just went "Turn Undead", the party swiped the magic pot, and they left. Said cleric was just a little startled when the banshee returned to attack her during a later fight. Turned a "medium" encounter into a "deadly" one...

D&D 5E Plate Mail and hobgoblins

When I was using the hobs in my game, I read the description and decided that, from the tone, a hobgoblin warlord is much less "Biggob the tribe leader" and more "Genghis Khan". So really nice gear would be expected.

    D&D 5E Legends & Lore - A Retrospective

Thanks for doing this - I've been hoping someone would. I'd really love to hear what the author thinks looking back.

    D&D 5E Can a PC perform a miracle with a stat/skill check?

Yeah, but do you let a character with a high Roleplaying score just roll the die, or do you make him roleplay it?

D&D 5E RAKSASHA (Limited Magic Immunity) X Empyrean (Bolt)

Actually, it's closer to a powerful cantrip IMO. It's one target, rolls to-hit, and doesn't do considerably more damage than a 3d10 fire bolt. I was originally thinking that it was just an attack, not a spell as such, but then I saw it specifically says "ranged spell attack" and I can't figure...

    D&D 5E Holy crap, that's cool

AngryDM had an article about this when 5e was in development. Basically, he agrees that they're "trap monsters", or better yet "puzzle monsters" - and that a lot of DMs do like them. But, as Hussar said, if you want to use them as puzzles you have to play fair, and that means giving clues...

D&D 5E Character play vs Player play

This is where, for all its detractors, Forge-speak can come in handy. I suspect MajoruO's players have different expectations from a D&D game than yours do, or mine. I wouldn't be surprised if his players are fully in the mode of "the DM provides a challenge for us to overcome" and are more...

D&D 5E DMG Preview: The Multiverse

Well, it's not properly a torus - but if you imagine the inside of a bicycle tire, with the "sky" where the open part is, you get a city that's got no end in one direction but has walls on the sides.

D&D 5E DMG Preview: The Multiverse

As a Planescape fan, I don't think I'd ever realized a design intent that you could go "sideways" in Sigil and wrap around to the other side of town. And I'd always enjoyed introducing primes to Sigil with the "and the city extends to the horizon and goes up ... up ... up until you can see the...

D&D 5E Is every Official Adventure Going to be about Saving the World?

Maybe the problem with "save the world" plots - apart from overuse - is the lack of a real narrative question. OF COURSE the PCs want to save the world. It's where their stuff is. Maybe they should do a path where the players have to decide whether the world deserves saving or not.

The Kuo-Toa Whip is CR 1 and has 65 HP. And it's a spellcaster. Does this make sense?
