Confessions of a 25 Year Old Gamer

@ Tequila I don't really have any advice, but thanks for sharing. I suppose you've already guessed, but you aren't alone. Holding a group together can be much more difficult than actually developing the game. Actually, maybe I do have some advice: try going to a convention like Origins or...

    Leatherbound Copy of 4th edition

I have been unable to find this item on ebay using any combination of 4E, leatherbound, Leather Bound, D&D, Dungeons and Dragons, and 4th Edition. I also typed in D&D, but the search results are mondo big and scary so I didn't bother looking for it there. So good luck, anyone else who'd...

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

Do you think the kids in the store said it looked like WoW because it looks like WoW and the others didn't or because it was the only one they bothered to read for more than a moment or two? WoD wouldn't look anything like WoW and 3.5 PHB is less accessible than 4E PHB (smaller text and more of...

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

Dude, if you reduce any edition of D&D to casual terms, (you assume the role of a character you create and take it through a fantasy world) anyone with even a passing knowledge of WoW will think the two are similar. Comparing 4th edition and 4th edition alone to WoW isn't any more reasonable...

    Order of the Stick 679

This. It only sounds forced to us because we live in a culture thinks of couples as husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend or, at the most basic level, man/woman. Other societies don't think this way, even within humanity. There's nothing forced about the idea that non-human societies don't...

    OotS 677

Any speculation over what the dust is for? My guess: a contingent temporal stasis spell, cast to trigger when the Fiends possess him/her. Edit: and the best line is clearly "I have held power about which the mightiest archmage can do naught but write bad self-insertion fan fiction!"

    Why I'm done with 4e

That's what you want in your RPG manual? Rules for digging through walls without a shovel? The game effects of Adamant Spoons? They omit these things not because they are impossible, but because it's patently ridiculous to waste space with corner case rules and expect DMs to obey them. Far...

    Why I'm done with 4e

I've had players hold grudges on me for not letting them use Scent to smell an approaching zombie in a mausoleum, for not using firearms in the campaign (they're in the DMG!), interceding against PvP spellcasting, and other things I do to maintain the regularity of the game. Situations like...

The Best Game of All Time...

Dread. Dread's mechanic is a Jenga Tower. That's an awesome hook that can convince people who'd otherwise never play an RPG to play. It's also an awesome mechanic that does most of the heavy lifting for the Host. Once you're in hour 3 of a game and 30 pulls have sucked out of the now-rickety...

DM Rewards: Hommlet and Ship Tiles (Soilers)

As one of the many, many people interested in the tiles who will not be receiving them for free, I'd like to congratulate Wotc on creating such a compelling incentive. Also, anyone considering paying 50 dollars for a set of tiles is crazy if they don't at least consider DragonFire Armada's...

4E 2010 Setting: Place Your Bets

Good choice, Wotc and congrats to everyone who saw it coming (not me, though). Looking forward to it already.

4E 2010 Setting: Place Your Bets

There's Draconians in the minis set premiering at GenCon, it's the 25th anniversary of the setting andthey've got retrospective books out by Weis? Dragonlance is either a mortal lock or the best fake-out Wotc has managed to pull since the My Little Ponies RPG. Still hoping for a surprise, though.

Pathfinder 1E Things you Think WoTC should follow from Paizo

It would be really cool to see something like the crit hit and crit miss deck come back for 4E. Maybe Wotc could make one of those. I'd also like to see more WAR art in Wotc's books and less recycled art. I am very happy that art standards have been raised in this edition. My favorite...

How we Speed up our Encounters -- what about you?

I double all variable damage expressions included in a monster's statblock and halve its HP (starts at bloodied, essentially). Note that this does not affect ongoing damage. I also subtract two from each defense value and increase damage die by 1 size. So a monster that does 1d6 + 3 instead...

Name me a system: Modern Horror

Dread, a diceless and numberless RPG, is best for a suspenseful, Twilight-zone style intrusive fantasy. Savage Worlds, a Fast! Furious! Fun! system would be better for more-combat focused games. The difference here is that Dread is elegant in its simplicity, whereas Savage Worlds is flexible...

    Who's going to Origins?

I'll be there! Leaving on Wednesday for the 12 hour drive, and hope to start gaming asap!

    OotS #661 is up!

Yeah, but core monsters with Wish as a spell-like ability are pretty rare. You've got your Efreets and Genies, who don't appear to have the requisite strangth score to be MitD, or Glabrezu, which don't seem like they'd spit out babies when they eat them.

    OotS #661 is up!

So, how many people are now searching for a monster that can teleport other people without going itself? This is a big tip, but blows my previous thought out of the water (like many, I assumed it was a baby Tarrasque).

    Local Game Store Tour

As I'm moving to Towson, MD in August, I'm really hard up for any game store recommendations. Please, please post if you know any good ones! As for my localities (Dale City to Richmond, VA), there are there are three that I recommend patronizing and several that I don't feel strongly enough to...

    [Eberron] Best Sourcebook?

Hands-down-nothing-comes-close-absolutely-best-Eberron-supplement is Sharn: City of Towers. Although almost entirely setting information, with very few rules text, this book is my favorite because it's a walking tour of the setting itself. Although later entries would, with varying quality...
