    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

The OP question was really not about auto success or failure.

    Dragonbane Announces Two New Books

Theoretically, there would be a couple rounds of combat and the PCs would realize they can't hurt it and they would flee. perhaps they would seek information on how to kill it. Maybe they would just move on to the next adventure. Either is equally valid 9although the latter feels like "losing to...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

One thing about the Daggerheart book (as opposed to the game system) as I read more of it: it is -- like most RPGs -- way too wordy. The authors are in love with their own prose and there are many places when talking about RULES where brevity would have served them better. Don't get me wrong...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I'm still fiddling with details. But it is all background. Mostly I want a Numenera-ish, dying earth fantasy world in which humans are the newest arrivals.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I am not so sure. it isn't like CR did not also run multiple Candela shows. I think Daggerheart is aimed at D&D players that want something more narrative, whether they are critters or not.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Just for fun, here is my foundation document for the Daggerheart setting i am building for playtest: --------- Neo-Pangea Overview of the Setting In the mid 21st century, a group of international researchers at the High Energy Antarctic Temporal Synchronicity (HEATSync) facility attempted to...

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Them too, but critters are hardly the only D&D fans in a silo.

Describe your last RPG session in more than 5 words.

I had a really good downtime session. The PCs are all 3rd level. They helped a village by eliminating a horrible demon thing in a nearby ruin, and have decided to make the village their home. It has some quirky NPCs and is positioned as a "rebel village" in the setting (which is the "side" the...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

But I'm not andi honestly can't figure out how to make what I'm saying more clear.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

One of these reasons I said people should look at that section (and I probably should have said this) is that isn't just a list of games. They tell us exactly what mechanical bits of those games informed the DH design. it is refreshingly honest and transparent. If folks like the duality dice...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

This is a good point. Rare events are to be celebrated or have weight or whatever, so it often inspires people to make 1s and 20s "matter." If there are critical hits and fumbles, that is built into combat. But D&D doesn't really do that for skill rolls.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

I'm a big proponent of the discovery roll.

Daggerheart Review: The Duality of Robust Combat Mechanics and Freeform Narrative

Why don't you just start with that assumption? Wouldn't that be easier and more accurate?

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

Again, it is in the OP. I presented a thing, and then asked (the general) you what you thought of it. I was just clarifying for (the specific) you that I was not talking about critical fumbles and hits, which you seemed to think i was. I think people are ethusiastic when they like something. If...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

I thought I was pretty clear in the OP, but perhaps not. The "unofficial narrative rules" I am talking about are how players and GMs tend to extra weight to 1s and 20s when they come up during play, and adjust the flow of the game (aka the narrative) in response to those results. I was not...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I caught the first 45 minutes or so of the Age of Umbra Session 0 last night, but then had to go to bed. I was going to watch the rest while I worked this morning but alas you must sub. I think I may anyway since there's no way i will be able to watch the full sessions live. Anyway, one thing...
