Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I saw a comment elsewhere (Reddit maybe) that suggested he shifted a little in episode 2 toward the narrative mechanics. I'll be interested to see if that isctrue. In either case, I thought the fight was fun. There's plenty of crunch and action options there.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I finally got to finish the first episode. I really enjoyed it, but I will say that Matt is pretty much running in 5E mode. I don't think I saw him interpret a narrative consequence one time.

D&D (2024) Wizards of the Coast promises to release more “CRPGs that are going to be as serious as BG3” without Larian

I will believe it when I see it. WotC led efforts are almost universally bad. They aren't a video game company. they should let video game companies make D&D games -- preferably really talented AA studios.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

The Shadow had superpowers. That is why I brought it up.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

I think they key might to build a system where you define characters by what their core elements are, and make those translate across "power levels" so that you never have to worry about "xp." It might be interesting to allow previous sessions experiences to impact play, even if they are out of...

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

Not usually in the context of young superheroes. Only if you like playing in that space. I generally don't. Sure.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

I think advancement is overvalued, especially outside of D&D and its ilk. Most characters in fiction do not get "better" all the time. They start out competent and "improve" by learning more about whatever dangerous and weird circumstances they encounter. There are characters focused on...

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

It has been a while since i read it, but in my recollection we spent A LOT of time with Rand be essentially useless. About 100 pages into Book 1 he finally got to cast burning hands or soemthing.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

I think it is more common in modern (post 1970s) epic fantasy for characters to start out as "normal" and grow into power. Rand al'Thor is probably the quintessential example. But I think most genre stories (and RPGs are a variation on those, most of the time) establish characters as special...

D&D (2024) It Is 2025 And Save Or Suck Spells Still Suck (the fun out of the game)

Call it what you want, but I have never seen a table benefit from spot nerfing or revenge fudging.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

It is just a question of general preference. I can see how you might quibble, but "bizarre"?

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

That certainly isn't true for Aragorn, and questionable for the Shadow at the start of his "PCness."

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

I feel like there is an excluded middle here. Exceptional does not necessarily mean Superman level. The Shadow is exceptional. So is Aragorn. Neither is a Superman.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I have a landscape and a portrait. I am an engineer and I very often have regulations etc to read alongside my work so the portrait works well. What I really need is third monitor as a second landscape for reference plans.

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

All this. I think people use "sword and sorcery" where they mean "low fantasy" or perhaps "grim and gritty." As you say, pulp fantasy heroes were everything from immortals to singularly heroic to supermen. And this is essentially what I mean in the OP and the poll question, and in case I never...

    New D&D Video Game Announced

Which is ironic because the recent Tomb Raider games had nearly as many RPG elements as Arkham or Horizon -- neither of which are RPGs proper but they get real close at least in their progression systems. Then we have looter shooters with level advancement. Are those RPGs?

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I IL some people because of ME as much a them. There are just some posters with whom I have friction, for no discernable reason, and I will IL those just to try and make not only my experience here better, but theirs as well (and, I assume, by extension everyone elses.) I do like the idea of...

Congratulations! After a complete release of my IL, you were the first to go back on! In two posts even! Excellent work.

    Let's Talk About Short Campaigns

You should re-read the OP because it says nothing about playtesting or lack of commitment. And it certainly does not invite the sort of gatekeeping and passive aggression you have been engaging in here. You made up that nonsense about "commitment".
