This. . 5E big screw up was following 3E save system with very bad savibg throws. 4E took pre 3E as inspiration. What makes save or suck si good is how reliable they are vs saves. Espicially vs buckets of hp. They shpikd fail 70% of the tine or more vs a good save. Bad save 50/50...

Well last week I used a refluffed death knight as an avatar of Myrkul vs 10th level PCs (CR 17). With a +7 iirc wisdom save, 3 legendary saves and magic resistance it lasted 3 rounds iirc. Actually got some damage in. 1 more round would have been perfect imho. Maybe extra 75hp and a 4th...

Greater Magic resistance on the rakshasa. Basically they automatically make their saves. Spells with attack rolls automatically miss. Magic resistance and legendary resistance often isn't enough. Oys a bit to easy to essentially stun lock bosses with low level spells.

Just noticed now? Wizards comparatively weak what until you see the sorcerer. Anything with weak wisdom save is in trouble. Very few spells target intelligence which is better vs NPCs. Any spell caster can aquire command or tashas as well. I've had CR 14-17 stunlocked.

Byzantine were good in Civ3 as a cultural victory on higher difficulty levels

Civ 3 was my favorite. Couldn't get into 4 to much.
