Did you give it legendaries, or was it a RAW death knight? I can see a RAW death knight getting murk'd by 6 PCs lvl9. 6 PCs is a lot.

"Make weapon attacks with your spellcasting stat" was one of the worst directions to head with 5e IMO. IIRC it started with Hexblade in Xanathar's, and spread from there throughout the design space.

For inspiration, you can always look at 3.Xe's creature types and subtypes... they had more creature types/subtypes than 5e has. I often look to 3e for inspiration and guidance when I look for stuff like that (deity domains for example- so many domains!).

The designers were on there often enough as well. I remember when Star Wars Saga Edition was alive and kicking, you could get some very interesting convos there with said designers, learn a lot of reasoning etc behind design choices. Shame it's all gone now :(

It's not saying "the standard encounter will be a party of 4 PCs, who will fight 1 monster." It's just explaining how CR works.

The question was whether there was a big shift on how available advantage was in 5e24 vs 14. Adding this every-attack to knockdown feature would qualify as a "Yes, it's even more available."

Well.. weapon masteries changed it a lot, right? Forcing a save vs knockdown as part of every hit with your attack is pretty big.
