I mean psionics is, like magic, completely fictional. Its concept can be whatever we, or in this case WotC, wants it to be. Heck, we don't track material components for our wizard, so I know we certainly wouldn't do it for a psion!
Well that is always the case with an edition. However, when you posit your observation as "5e24" based one would assume your talking about art / images new to the 2024/2025 update as many monsters have had a design tweak, dragons in particular.
It the video you posted Mike made it very clear that the spreadsheet calculation was just a starting point. That playtesting could cause a revision in the CR up or down. So I think it is likely you can only get so close with a spreadsheet style calculator. Get 100% accuracy with the MM just...
OK, I have done a deep dive yet, but I just take a look at the monsters the 2014 DMG and your formula are in agreement, but disagree with the 2014 MM to see if revisions in 2024 versions change the result.
Giant Ape CR 7
Using the 2014 DMG calculator I get the following:
2014: CR 6
2024: CR...
That counts, that is the only one I thought might be official. It is interesting that we have lots of Tiamat, a few Bahamut images, and only on of Saridor.
I don't believe I have seen any of the traditional Asian-inspired D&D dragons in 5e24 yet. We have the gold dragon, but that is a different discussion. Where did you see these dragons?
I am with @Demetrios1453 here. I find those images of Saridor very suspect (and that is the same site I got my image from). The one I posted seemed to reference an actual product, IIRC, but it wasn't one I was familiar with. I am going to summon @Echohawk to see if they know of an official...
Do you have any examples? I remember looking when Fizban's came out and I couldn't find much. IIRC, I found one image that I thought might not be fan made, this one (and I am not sure this is an actual TSR image either):
That is definitely not true (blue and copper in have thin necks particular are thin in the concept art), but some do have thick necks in some of the images. That is a good think. IMO, thick neck = strong; skinny neck = weak and I generally like my dragons to be strong. Though there is a point...
No, it is the 2024 design, just by a different artist. Look at the horns - straight out the 2024 handbook. It looks a lot like the red head from the Tiamat image in the 2024 PHB as well.
I always loved that story, I was sad to find out that it was mostly not true (as in not what Asian people believed). It was a story, but not THE story on the origin of dragons.
