    OSR Let's make Shadowdark classes!

Yeah, they’re crazy common. There’s no downside to trying them every single attack. They don’t always work, as said, you have to hit and roll a 3+ on the deed die. The deed die starts at 1d3 at 1st and moves up the DCC RPG dice chain with each level. 1d4 at 2nd, 1d5, 1d6, 1d7, 1d8, and to 1d10+1...

    OSR Let's make Shadowdark classes!

You have the extra step of having to confirm the AC+4 thing with the referee. For something that’s potentially happening every round, that will add up. The higher TN also means there are some monsters you just can’t perform deeds on when attacking. Which goes against the original intent...

Worlds of Design: What Should Be in an RPG Book?

An admonition to look outside the genre (tabletop RPGs), to read and play widely across all game types (video games and boardgames especially) and styles before trying to design something. To take what works no matter the source and adapt it to serve the game you’re designing. Tabletop RPGs...

    OSR Let's make Shadowdark classes!

For me the random element was the regular attack roll. I wouldn’t want to add the extra step to resolve unless it’s purely a player-side mechanic, similar to rolling a 3+ on the deed die in DCC RPG.

    OSR Let's make Shadowdark classes!

In DCC the class is called warrior, so that's easy enough. Likely keep all the basic stuff but drop the three features for mighty deeds. It's simple enough an idea, but not sure how it implement it. Maybe drop the deed die and just automatically gain some kind of rider like disarm, called shot...

    OSR Let's make Shadowdark classes!

So, I'm almost entirely new to designing Shadowdark classes. I'm a big fan of DCC RPG and want port over at least the warrior and some of the wizard shenanigans to Shadowdark. I think the DCC wizard would be easier because you can just add the neat stuff (spellburn, mercurial magic, corruption...

D&D 5E Hypothetical: WotC goes under and Hasbro vaults D&D. Now What?

What happens if WotC is shuttered tomorrow and D&D the brand disappears? We'd likely see a much bigger version of the OGL fiasco play out. Lots of fans not caring and continuing on. Most hardcore fans have shelves filled with more books than they'll be able to use in a lifetime of playing. Lots...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Generally the more familiar you are with something the less it's able to inspire that sense of awe or wonder or adventure. The best way to overcome that is try new things. A style of play you've never done before, a style of adventures you've never done before, or try a new game... Well, there...

What are you reading in 2025?

I loved what I’ve read of his. It’s been a minute. I should try a reread at some point, too.

    Brainstorming a superhero Borg game

This idea was sparked by a post over on the What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now? thread. At first, superheroes and Borg games might seem like a perfect mismatch. But I think you could do a lot with the idea. And others already have. There's already a few superhero Borg games out there. To me...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Yeah. I absolutely love what are effectively one-and-done RPGs. Not necessarily only one book or product, but you have everything you actually need in one book. And the lighter the better. Pirate Borg is a gold standard as far as I'm concerned. The rules are basically summed up in the back end...

D&D 5E What If Everyone Could Use Scrolls? (House rule)

Both great reasons to make casting from scrolls like 4E rituals. Long casting time and expensive components. Something like a check to cast even as a ritual and 1000gp per spell level should about line up right. You could even make rituals a mini game or skill challenge. Multiple rolls...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Wow. Great question. Huge and sweeping. What's missing? Just about anything that's not directed at predominantly white, middle-class guys with lots of disposable income and heaps of free time. Getting into the hobby? Cheaper books, less reliance on expensive on-ramping materials, lighter...

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

He’s still a working artist. You can find his art mostly in the OSR. DCC RPG recently did an alt cover from him for their core book. A dust cover for Dungeon Denizens. A DCC module or two. An alt cover for Old-School Essentials. One or more editions of Swords & Wizardry has an Otus cover...

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

Same. Otus is my gold standard for fantasy art. His piece in the Cthulhu section of Deities & Demigods is amazing. When I use the B/X cover piece as my avatar I center the doorway in the background because as much as the action in the foreground grabs my attention, I’m obsessed with that...

What Video Game RPG System Do You Want to See Adapted to Tabletop

There was a similar thread a few years ago. D&D 5E - [+] What can D&D 5E learn from video games? Three systems I’d like to see are dynamic difficulty, FF14’s class switching, and WoW-style specialization switching. Dynamic difficulty is where the difficulty changes based on how well you’re...

GMing Mistakes You’ve Made in the Past

My first time running D&D was a wonderful disaster. Absolute learning & teaching moment. I tried to run a module. I say tried because the players immediately zigged when they needed to zag. Immediately as in the first five minutes of the first session. All the money and time prepping it went...
