Best superhero movie of all time? (Nominations thread)

Weird. I can only think of a few minor points where they overlap. Even the most powerful high-end pulp heroes are peanuts compared to your bog-standard superhero. The most powerful pulp heroes are at best absurdly low-powered street-level superheroes. And that's basically the only place they...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Not for long though. In comics they'd just bring the dead back to life. It would all be a dream or they'd realize it's a simulation, an alternate dimension, alternate reality, someone would time travel and fix it, on and on and on. Gods I love comic books. Speaking of, besides things like Game...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yeah. That's why superheroes are spandex-clad soap operas. You know the hero's going to win so they have to spice up the B story with a body count and add a heaping buttload of melodrama.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yep. It's a problem as old as literature. The heroes are frequently passive until the villain acts, then reactive throughout the story. The villains are almost always active throughout the story. So the villains are more interesting because they have goals and are pursuing them while the hero is...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

That has got to be some kind of record for sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting. Remember kids, if you're playing devil's advocate or "just asking questions" there's an almost 100% chance you're violating Wheaton's Law.

Best superhero movie of all time? (Nominations thread)

Couldn’t disagree more. They’re clearly cousins as one is the inspiration of the other, but they are distinct. There’s overlap in the Venn diagram between the high-end pulp hero and the low-end superhero, but there’s just too much unique to each that makes them distinct.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Unironically, yes. Different preferences for different types of media.

Best superhero movie of all time? (Nominations thread)

It’s a great movie and I would have included it, but I think it’s more pulp heroes than superheroes. It’s far more The Shadow, Doc Savage, and Indiana Jones than Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man. And yes, I’m well aware of their entangled history.

D&D General Sandbox style: Rumors say a +1 sword is in a cave nearby. Go get it?

Or you promote a hireling, or you find your new character in the next room, or... The only reason a player sits on their hands between characters in an old-school game is because the referee wants them to.

Damn, man. How’d you fit the whole boot in your mouth? If it weren’t so cringe it would be impressive.

    2025 Hugo Nominees Announced

Huh. I will definitely have to pick up Speculative Whiteness: Science Fiction and the Alt-Right and give it a read. Those Sad Puppies just won’t go away.

Best superhero movie of all time? (Nominations thread)

That’s a hard one. Top six are easy. The Incredibles. Superman with Christopher Reeve. Captain America: First Avenger. Black Panther. Ant-Man. Guardians of the Galaxy. Picking one of those as the best. Damn. Depends on the day.

If you don’t want people to point at you and call you a duck, maybe stop quacking like a duck and waddling like a duck. What was that anecdote about the bartender throwing out the polite Nazi? Seems relevant somehow.

What are you reading in 2025?

Honestly it all reads like Sad Puppy "ew girls books" nonsense. All it takes to find any kind of book suited to any kind of reader is about 5 minutes on Google.

Necessity of a Social Negotiation System? – When Should It Be Relevant?

This sounds amazing. So far I’ve avoided Pendragon because the idea of knights in shining armor sounds so boring.

D&D General So what about the SRDs?

I’m curious if plans are still moving ahead to release the revised 5E stuff under the CC-BY SRD as promised so long ago. Also very curious about older editions being released under a CC-BY SRD as talked about so long ago. Any updates on this?
