Has Anyone Listened to the Opening Arguments Podcast on the Gizmodo coverage?

I don't want to derail the thread (too much), but this touches upon a problem that I think clarifies why this WotC OGL is something that people should unite on, regardless of which "side" they're on in other issues. For one, there is no singular correct (or even "progressive") view on issues...

I'm beginning to dislike Netflix (re: Archive 81, 1899, Warrior Nun etc cancellations)

For this reason, mainly: https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/01/16/netflix-has-created-a-self-fulfilling-cancelation-loop-with-its-new-shows/?sh=260d528e78c3 For me it started with the cancellation of Archive 81, a show I really liked but they cancelled after a single season...

D&D General My "Perfect D&D" Would Include...

Well, I'm riffing off of the thread topic, which is a hypothetical "perfect D&D." So why not be idealistic? But yeah, I haven't really seen a game like that, or at least one that offers both (there are great "D&D-esque" simpler games, and of course very complex ones).

D&D General My "Perfect D&D" Would Include...

I don't see an option for: "Be very simple, with complex options that can easily be added or subtracted." You know, the mythical "complexity dial." To me that's the holy grail of D&D. A game that you can play at varying levels of complexity, from at least "rules pretty lite" (e.g. Castles &...

What are you reading in 2023?

I just finished Arthur C Clarke's City and the Stars, one of his earlier novels from the 1950s. Very cool and evocative imagery, with his usual big cosmological/historical speculations. Takes place a billion years in the future.

    Critical Role Issues Statement

Sounds like your feed is on "For You" rather than "Following." If you want to see tweets by people you follow, set it towards the latter. (I was confused at first, too, but going to Following reverting back to seeing only/mostly tweets from people I follow)

D&D (2024) Are you a pure WotC player?

It could just be my own sometime's faulty comprehension.

D&D (2024) Are you a pure WotC player?

There's no option for what I imagine is true for most people here (that play 5E): Own and use WotC and 3PP products.

    Can WotC be forgiven?

Right, but they're probably not going to change their basic nature - that of a wolf, in my analogy. They'll just be better at playing the sheep...which may end up being enough, or amounting to close to the same thing, at least to a certain point. The RPG industry is somewhat rare in that it is...

    Can WotC be forgiven?

Can a wolf that you thought was a sheep be forgiven for actually being a wolf? Now maybe it isn't that simple. Certainly, "WotC" includes good people, and the "wolf" is ultimately Hasbro. So sure, WotC could be forgiven (that is, trusted again) if it wasn't owned by Hasbro. But Hasbro is going...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

I think it depends on how you look at it. In the real world, there are few cases of obvious, outright "intentional evil." They happen, but usually on a small scale. Most of what we consider to be "evil" (or should I say "bad") is people who think what they're doing is "good", but ignore or don't...

    Imagining a post-OGL world

Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at with "more than the market can bear" and smaller Pathfinders emerging (and most dwindling away). But the community focus is key, yet I remain agnostic if whether this breaking up a bit would be a good or bad thing. On one hand, it is nice in that...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

I hear you, and think this has definitely been true for most of the last 50 years, but that WotC might be banking on it not being true in the future, at least based on what Lisa Codega wrote. WotC is (or will be) focusing on VTT, and "ease of play" modalities, so it might be that the D&D of the...

    Imagining a post-OGL world

Forgive me if this has been discussed already - I imagine it has, if only scattered throughout the hundreds of threads on the larger subject - but I'm a bit of a johnny-come-lately to the discussion. I wanted to start a thread that considers a post-OGL world, namely the RPG community, and what...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

Maybe this is just my unrealistic idealism talking, but I find that -- or hope that -- focusing on short term gains ends up hurting in the long-run. Of course the capitalist system is endlessly exploitable, and corporations seem to always find a way to shift around short-term gains and keep...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

And there's another option, that still protests WotC while playing D&D (in the case that they back-pedal and make a better OGL, but we're all still left with a sour taste): Buy only third party material, but nothing from WotC. There's enough out there that you literally never need to buy...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

Yeah, it is actually kind of nice to a feel a sense of unity among the community. But, if Lisa Codega and this email are correct, it might not matter. WotC is investing in casual fans and the future, and perhaps the likelihood that enough long-time players will just suck it up and/or rationalize...

Rumours: WotC Announcement Today; Insider Email Reveals Plans

I keep coming back to the view that no matter what WotC does, something has been broken - a feeling of goodwill and trust from the flagship company of D&D. I mean, it is a basic principle: if you're nice 95% of the time but abusive 5% of the time, the abuse defines who you are (to the abused)...

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Sorta kinda. But this takes the cake, imo.
